I'd like to see local newspaper people around the country attempt to publish strictly local papers. There's one near me. They follow sports, city council, school board, crime, entertainment, etc.

This is a tactical victory in a strategic loss...a symptom of American illiteracy and reliance on national soundbytes rather than local news and in-depth analysis.
Some shallow FReepers will just blindly cheer it, though, like clueless passengers of the Titanic who stop and listen to the lovely music from the band. But libs are fine, since the sooner newspapers go down, the quicker media control is tightened by the left.
The Bulletin is great, but their reporting corps couldn't cover if the Inky and DN stopped publishing. Maybe someday... :-)
Companies like Jounal Register Corp. are (were) in that niche, and are dying off. Note that these are often more conservative papers, too.
Because local papers have been so good in rooting out corruption in Philly these past few decades!!

That fact while true, is irrelevant. The paper is a business and the cost of providing the local coverage noted exceeds the revenue to purvey it.
That would be fine and dandy IF they actually reported on these corrupt politicians.
But that's where WE come in.
If there is a market for local coverage, other newspapers will emerge. If they are intelligent free-marketers, they will present the news in a more objective manner and will be able to maintain a market.
Getting rid of the DBM, one rag at a time....
“I know it’s not a popular view around here but local newspapers going down isn’t all good.” IMO Borges, it is what it is, the local news is migrating into a different medium, the noozpaper business is not the end all for journalism and if they only manage to survive by being on the taxpayer’s tab...they should be gone. BTW, this is called reality aka market forces aka creative distruction.
The Philadelphia Enquirer? Is that the main lib rag there? Chris Mathews laughingly quipped, when someone cited Philadelphia’s paper is an unbiased news source: “HA!!!! About the only paper more liberal in America is the Baltimore Sun-and that’s saying something!!!”
Dag, I thought that it was just out here in the burbs.
Then again, I don’t know that there are too many in Baltimore city who would readit.
I noticed last year that a lib flavored “free” paper had been placed in competitive markets.
This publication was either out out by the SUN or the City Paper ~ I think? My guess was that it was strategically placed to soak up what little ad revenue the paper had.
They have, for many years been boring and predictable. We already know how and why a story might be written. We already know how the story will end. We know who the victim will be and we know who/what the villain will be. Journalists are rather incurious.
Young people don’t read newspapers. They look for entertainment. In general, their educational experience didn’t include critical-thinking, historical perspective, civic knowledge. And those who are somewhat interested have their commandments down. Left=good, care more, victim, global warming/climate change, coffee latte; right=bad, war, villain, guns, corporations/business, meat. Why bother with something they already know.
Anyway, the next generation is not going to read newspapers local or national. We are the last generation to bother with them and papers are losing what left of us. Too bad. Local papers once were the glue of the community.
Any newspaper that gets funding from the government will be just another leftist newsletter — there will be no difference in content than what we get now.

These papers knew they were cutting their own circulation with their propoganda, but they continued to advance their political views over good business sense. They could have adjusted to present a more even-balanced readership and they didn’t because they wanted to advance their politicalk agenda.
They chose their current situation.
The WaPo turned the tide for Webb down in VA with what amounts to millions of dollars in free ad space on the front of their paper in September and October 06. i don’t feel the least bit sorry for their loss of readership.
Some thing else will come up for those who like their news in newsprint.
The only thing better than the LA Times failing will be when the NY Times does.
Exactly. I may be biased considering I am a newspaper reporter at present, but having them go down is NOT a good thing.
As much as I would like to see liberal papers, center/libertarian or even conservative papers like the one I work for are hurting as well. It is not just liberal papers that are in trouble.
