One in five Los Angeles County residents -- nearly 2.2 million people -- are receiving public assistance payments or benefits, a level county officials say will rise significantly over the coming months as the fallout from the recession continues.
The percentage of people on county aid already equals the figure at the height of the 2001-03 recession and far exceeds the one in seven who needed help during the economic downturn in the early 1990s and the one in nine assisted in the collapse of the early 1980s.

Wow!
Illegal Aliens stealing tax-payer monies via government services they have no moral right to.
and the rest of America gets to pick up the tab!! Great going there Gov. Shistenagor!!
You are misplaced with your blame.
This is othing more than what the people of Californis KEEP VOTING FOR.
They are getting the government they wanted, and the government they deserve. And it’s on the verge of coming apart because of it.
wow we’re worse than Hawaii.
“They are getting the government they wanted, and the government they deserve. And its on the verge of coming apart because of it.”
My point is however that the REST OF AMERICA has to pick up the tab!!
WE ALL ARE BAILING OUT CALIFORNIA WITH OUR HARD EARNED TAX DOLLARS!!
SCREW CALIFORNIA(sorry Jim)!! I’d rather support my own state...we are making pretty wise decisions here in Texas. We are poised to handle a deep recession better than most states because we are still a conservative state and fiscally responsible.
But the LOOTERS want our money and the ‘LOOTER IN CHIEF’ Obama wants everybody’s money...to distribute the way he sees fit!!
To hell with that....
The TEA PARTY has begun!
Except we voted to stop all government handouts to illegals, and kick them out of schools, and the 9th Circuit said no. That accounts for 1/2 the deficit right there.
well immigration is always good! When immigrants are screened for job talent, languge skills, level of education, and given a careful backround check.
No, you are misplacing the blame. A lot of good people there that don’t vote for what government they have, and don’t deserve.
I know full well there are good people there, most not in the
large urban areas....However, it is time that they realize their state is lost - they simply don’t breed fast enough to keep up with influx of illegal immigrants, new liberal arrivals, and those liberals that stay. The longer the good people (real Americans) of California remain there, the more they dilute the voting strength of the rest of the country. Move to somewhere where your vote may actually do some good. For God’s sake, leave there.
I’m an ex-Californian, and so is all of my immediate family. Problem is, it seems like whenever I run into other ex-Californians, they complain about how awful California was, then in the next breath start talking about how their new state needs to change and do all these other things like how California did it. Some people need to just stay in California.
wow
Once they get on public aid, they will never leave it. Why should they? It’s free money to them, they have no education that will help them advance in their lives and have no desire to do so. Advancement means work and they don’t want to work. Obama will take care of his people.....he has just started.
Just 20%?
