At a private White House cocktail reception last night for leaders of major progressive groups, Barack Obama and his wife Michelle appealed to these leaders and signaled that their groups would play a key role in driving the big progressive changes at the heart of the White Houses legislative agenda, an attendee tells me.
The message was that these groups would be valuable as a kind of progressive outside echo chamber, as the attendee puts it.
The party which was organized by top Obama aide Valerie Jarrett signals that the White House is moving forward with efforts to build coordination with outside progressive groups in order to drive the White Houses message and beat back its foes. As I reported recently, Jarrett is at the center of those efforts.
Obama didnt give a talk, and the President, Michelle, and Joe Biden mingled informally with various groups of progressive leaders. The message, the attendee adds, was that its very clear that there will need to be an echo chamber and a way for groups on the outside to build the case for big progressive legislation.
The gist was, `Were gonna need people out there telling the story of the stimulus and telling the story about how much we need big health care reform and clean energy and green jobs, the attendee says.
Among those on the guest list: Labor leaders Jimmy Hoffa, Gerry McEntee and Andy Stern; MoveOns Eli Pariser; Sierra Clubs Carl Pope; Planned Parenthoods Cecile Richardson; and Joe Solomonese of the Human Rights Campaign.
Word of the gathering first leaked out when Ben Smith posted Andy Sterns Twitter saying hed just been at the reception.
This is a key development for progressive leaders; more soon.

I heard about this on Roger Hedgecock today and found the information. Every cause to undermine America, you should read what the Lefties say in this blog about "progressive" ideals...green energy, socialized medicine, the tearing down of companies in favor of government, the taking of private property and guns, the abortion-on-demand crowd...open borders, labor unions...the endless Affirmative Action advocates...social justice...
Communism, in a word is the driving force of Obama since he was close to Frank Marshall Davis in Hawaii and has gone downhill via the Chicago Liberal machine to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Something tells me a certain smug jerk who used to be with the Weatherman Underground is smiling somewhere on the South Side of Chicago.

Thank you for the post. Dang I knew it was going to be bad, but wow. We are going to have to be in full court press for the next four years. I am up for it though even though I feel so worn down by these evil, commie freaks. I love my country, our constitution, my God, my Judeo-Christian values and I am not afraid to die for them if it comes to it. Prefer to vote these fools out come 2010 & 2012, but until then they can and are doing a lot of damage.

Maybe a dumb question, but the MSM didn’t report anything about this cocktail party reception/meeting/strategy session. Don’t they want us to know what the president is planning, and with whom he is consulting????????

These next four years are going to very very bad. Let's hold out hope that the 2010 elections will shift the congressional majority to the good guys, and curtail Obozo's free reign. So, maybe we need only suffer through another 23 months instead of 4 years.

Didn’t the left want to know who were at meeting with VP Cheney? And took him to court to demand the content of those meetings?
We should do the same.

WE ARE SCREWED AND SO IS THE UNITED STATES
Eli Pariser is international campaigns director for MoveOn, an Internet website that mobilizes liberal activists for the U.S. Democratic Party.
"The son of two 1960s activists who founded an alternative high school in Camden, Maine, Pariser graduated from college at 19," reports Mother Jones magazine. His emergence as an Internet activist began "in the immediate aftermath of September 11, when he wanted to protest the president's demand for vengeance." Pariser "created an online petition, 9-11peace.org, which urged 'moderation and restraint.' In what would prove a powerful lesson in online organizing, Pariser emailed the link to 30 friends. They did likewise, and so did their friends."
"A few days later I got a call saying the site was crashing because too many people were logging on," Pariser recalled. Within two weeks, more than half a million people had signed the petition. The petition also brought him in touch with MoveOn founder Wes Boyd, and soon thereafter the two merged their websites.
By 2008 MoveOn had become one of the largest contributors of money to Democratic Party political candidates and electing Democrats is now its primary mission. For example, Eli Pariser sent a January video to MoveOn's massive email list warning that "a lot of Democrats think we are going to ... slide into victory. I don't. ... We need to make sure we that we win, and we've got a big plan to do that ... to get out the vote for the Democratic candidate."
Gerald W. McEntee is the International President of the 1.6 million-member American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), one of the most aggressive and politically active organizing unions in the AFL-CIO. Since 2006, 145,000 women and men have changed their lives by forming a union with AFSCME. McEntee was first elected AFSCME President in 1981 and was re-elected in July 2008 to another four-year term.
As a Vice President of the AFL-CIO and chair of the Political Education Committee, McEntee is a key leader of the labor movement and its political efforts. Under McEntees leadership, the federation created its highly successful and much imitated voter education and mobilization program, which increased the number of union household voters to a record 26 percent of the electorate in 2006.
McEntee has long been a leader in the fight to reform the nations health care
Andrew L. "Andy" Stern
Elected in 1996 to succeed John Sweeney, Stern has become known as something of a firebrand in the labor movement, adopting a strategy of aggressive organizing while sometimes vocally criticizing other union leaders and the AFL-CIO's organizing structure. One of the co-founders of the New Unity Partnership, Stern publicly suggested his and other unions would split from the AFL-CIO if it failed to make major organizational changes. On July 25, 2005 the SEIU, along with the Teamsters, announced that it was officially disaffiliating from the AFL-CIO. The two unions, and others, would form the Change to Win Federation.
Stern was widely expected to support the anticipated candidacy of John L. Wilhelm, vice-president of UNITE HERE, for AFL-CIO president (challenging Sweeney) in 2005; after the AFL-CIO split this came to nothing.
Born in West Orange, New Jersey, Stern was a student leftist in the 1960s. He earned a B.A. in education and urban planning from the University of Pennsylvania. Stern began his career as a social worker and SEIU member in 1973, eventually being elected president of his Pennsylvania local. In 1980, he was elected to the union's executive board, and in 1984 then-president Sweeney put him in charge of its organizing efforts.
Stern has also embraced political organizing via the Internet in the wake of the Howard Dean campaign, which his union endorsed; he has started his own blog as well as founding Purple Ocean, an online membership organization affiliated with the SEIU. In fall of 2005, he launched an online contest called Since Sliced Bread that claims to award $100,000 for the best new economic idea in America.
Since May 2005, he has been a contributing blogger at The Huffington Post.
Carl Pope is the Executive Director of the Sierra Club, an American environmental organization founded by conservationist John Muir in 1892. Pope was appointed to his position as Executive Director in 1992.
Pope has worked with the Sierra Club for more than 30 years, and has served as a board member for other organizations, including the National Clean Air Coalition, California Common Cause, and Public Interest Economics Inc. He has served as Political Director for Zero Population Growth. He was a Peace Corps volunteer in India from 1967 to 1969.
Pope is a regular contributor to the Huffington Post, a left-wing website founded by Arianna Huffington.
In 2004 he published a book with Paul Rauber called Strategic Ignorance: Why the Bush Administration Is Recklessly Destroying a Century of Environmental Progress.
On June 7, 2006, in Washington, D.C., Carl Pope, along with labor leader Leo Gerard, announced the formation of the United Steelworkers' and Sierra Club's Blue/Green Alliance, after five years of negotiations between the two groups. The alliance focuses on interrelated issues that both organizations feel are important, including: a clean environment, better jobs, and a safer world.
Pope recently expressed support for the Pickens Plan, an effort by T. Boone Pickens to reduce America's dependence on foreign oil. Pickens, a billionaire oil investor, Republican, and financier of conservative causes, took Pope, via his $60 million private plane, to his ranch in west Texas, where Pickens and a group of investors plan to invest $12 billion in wind turbines.
In January 2009, Pope announced his intention to step down from the post of Executive Director, effective upon the hiring of a successor. Pope will continue with the Sierra Club in the position of Chairman and will focus on climate change.
Joe Solmonese was appointed President of the Human Rights Campaign of the United States and its affiliate, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, on March 9, 2005. A native of Attleboro, Massachusetts, Solmonese, aged 40 at the time of his appointment, lives in Washington, D.C. He graduated from Boston University in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science degree in communications.
Solmonese is the former Chief Executive Officer of EMILY's List, where he oversaw one of the nation's prominent pro-choice Democratic political action committees.
Solmonese developed the Political Opportunity Program (POP) for state and local candidates to ensure a stream of viable, electable women candidates. In 2004, the second cycle of the program's operation, EMILY's List helped elect 141 women, changing the legislative makeup in Colorado, Vermont, North Carolina, Washington and Oregon.
Solmonese has worked for numerous campaigns and in government positions. He held top fundraising positions at the 1992 Senate campaign of Les AuCoin and Barney Frank's 1990 Congressional campaign. Solmonese began his career as an aide in the office of Massachusetts governor Michael Dukakis.
He now co-hosts "The Agenda" on XM Satellite Radio.
