DeMint to Force Vote on Bill Banning Fairness Doctrine

Although a spokesman for President Barack Obama said the administration wouldn’t pursue the revival of the Fairness Doctrine, Republican Sen. Jim DeMint, S.C., wants Senate Democrats to go on the record one way or another on the issue.

DeMint, chairman of the Senate Steering Committee, said on Feb. 19 he will offer the Broadcaster Freedom Act as an amendment to the D.C. Voting Rights bill next week. The Broadcaster Freedom Act was introduced by Republican lawmakers last month and prevents the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) from reinstating the Fairness Doctrine.

“I’m glad President Obama finally confirmed his opposition to the Fairness Doctrine, which attacks the right of free speech on talk radio, but many Democrats in Congress are still pushing it,” DeMint said. “With the support of the new administration, now is the time for Congress to take a stand against this kind of censorship. I intend to seek a vote on this amendment next week so every senator is on record: Do you support free speech or do you want to silence voices you disagree with?”

Good too many people either don’t know about this or assume it’s just conservatives being paranoid.

No democrat will go on record; they’ll give a mealy-mouthed non-answer.

I think the Dems have given up the idea of reinstating the Fairness Doctrine. Instead, I think they will try to enact similar restrictions, only under the guise of something else. They also hope to target internet sites as well.

In a somewhat related note, MoveOn.org has begun running attack ads on Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) which is curious because, as best as I know, he’s not up for an election anytime soon. I guess the MoreOns just have more Soros money than they know what to do with.

It’s my prediction (I hope I’m wrong) that Spector, Snowe and Collins have already been bought with the Porkulus.

Does anyone see them as not being owned?

Either that, or they’ll ALL be against the Censorship Doctrine, and the Libs will try to end talk radio with Local and Diversity rulings by the FCC.

Good article posted on foxnews.com; they mentioned that DeMint might bring this up before the Senate. It was questionable that Reid would even allow it to go to the floor. Figures, that way the dums wouldn’t have to vote on it.

I wonder if the Maine twins and Specter will vote in favor of reintroducing the Fairness doctrine?

That’s fine if they vote against the “Fairness Doctrine” but that’s not how the Left is going to accomplish what they want. They’re planning to do that “Localism” b.s.

I hope DeMint includes wording which covers all possibilities - not just the FD per se.

My prediction for the vote on banning the Fairness Doctrine

For 38

* 38 (R)

Against 62

* 56 (D)
* 2 (I)
* 3 (R) (Snowe, Collins, Specter)
* 1 (Al Franken jumping the gun as Senator-Elect)

Present 1

* 1 (Senator Barack Obama forgot to turn off his APVM, or Automated “Present” Voting Machine)

How exactly can he “force” a vote? I’m thinking the Democrats could quash that if they wanted to.

When we take back the Congress, we need to change the rules to allow ONLY the following 3 choices as legitimate votes:

(1) YEA

(2) NAY

(3) I'M A DOUCHEBAG

And if you don't show up to vote, it defaults to #3.

Then those campaigning can say, "ladies and gentlemen, my opponent is a complete bag. Just ask him! He voted himself a DB 37% of the time!"
