STAMFORD, Connecticut — Doctors say a Connecticut woman mauled by a 200-pound chimpanzee is making slight progress after more than seven hours of surgery by four teams of surgeons.

Dr. Kevin Miller of Stamford Hospital says 55-year-old Charla Nash suffered extensive facial and hand injuries when she was attacked Monday. He says stabilizing her condition took more than seven hours of surgery.

It's a miracle that she survived.

Sandra Herold told The Associated Press on Wednesday that she never gave the drug to her 14-year-old chimp, Travis, who was shot dead by Stamford police Monday after he grievously wounded Nash.

However, Herold said in an interview aired Wednesday morning on NBC television that she gave Travis the drug in some tea less than five minutes before he attacked Nash — she even showed a reporter the mug. Police have said Herold told them that she gave Travis Xanax that had not been prescribed for him earlier on Monday to calm him because he was agitated.

Changing her story now.....

That's never a good sign.

is it just me, or are animals becoming bigger ashpoles all the time?

The woman who owned that animal should be brought up on criminal charges. Those things are snake mean and vicious even when hand raised and properly handled. And she should have had a shot gun at the very least incase the thing went literally apesh*t.

And giving the thing drugs to boot ... I’d rather share a house with a tiger or a lion.

From the size of Travis, it looks like she fed him well.

With the issues she’s going to have to deal with she may not WANT to live.

The problem is that some people believe that animals think and reason like humans. I once had a discussion with my hair dresser where I told her that I was getting my new kittens spayed and neutered. She asked me "Why are you doing that?" I told her because I did not want kittens. She then said "Well they wouldn't would they?" I had to explain to her that dumb animals do not understand familial relationships. It was news to her.

I guess being raised on an Iowa farm, I had this knowledge from an early age. Don't ever remember thinking anything different.

From what I understand, though it is illegal to own that type of animal now, she is grandfathered in so did nothing illegal for criminal charges to be brought. If she gave it drugs that might change things which would make sense.

Anyone think she was more than a friend with the chimp?

I’ve been trying to avoid going down that road ... but the bits about giving the chimp wine and “snuggling” seem really creepy to me.

“I’d rather share a house with a tiger or a lion.”

I don’t know about that. I think we’d all agree it’s NOT a good idea to give any animal you can’t handle freedom of movement about your house.

Sometimes this includes adolescent male homo sapiens.

how can someone not have a face. That is just beyond comprehension. Poor lady :(

Maybe Sandra gave the drug but the chimp didn't ingest it? Hopefully an autopsy will reveal the truth. This lady better not be changing her story to make herself appear innocent. It is a very selfish act considering her friend is messed up for life.

In other articles, professional animal handlers say that chimps are the worst because it’s never an issue of if they go off the deep end, but when.

It will happen, guaranteed.

These Primates of Hate should be outlawed!

There should be breed specific legislation outlawing the ownership of these dangerous primates.

Really. Sooner or later the 200 lb male chimp is going to figure out he’s top primate around the treehouse and try to do a little swingin’. If confronted, it just makes sense that he’d assert his dominance in an instinctive way. Like I heard or read some monkey expert saying, aggressive behavior is normal for this animal.
