Darwin as Compassionate Buddhist Ape Descendant
Feb 17, 2009 It seems odd to call a secular scientific theory like Darwinism a Buddhist belief. Thats what National Geographic claimed today. Darwin the Buddhist? Empathy Writings Reveal Parallels, wrote Christine DellAmore...

Chimps are fine, until they go apeshit and rip off your face.
ping!
Well, that would explain the origin of his beliefs. Darwin was a reincarnated ape, raised to a man at his reincarnation.
Unfortunately, however, he flunked the test, instead of finding Enlightenment, and probably will be reincarnated as an ape again. Or maybe a chimp.
And then he will be captured in the wild and sent to a zoo!

well one could say the same thing about people but we need a tad bit more provocation ;-)
LOL!
When legitimate science threads are immediately bounced into CHAT how is it endlessly repetitive flatearth threads are allowed to remain in NEWS ?
Us poor rednecks--born into a culture whose "creation myth" is the only one in the world that is "unscientific!"
In addition to inventing theories to hide their faces from God, they hate the fact that every discovery they will ever make is already known by the Creator.

Flat earth? Don’t confuse us with the Temple of Darwin.
Thanks for the ping!
Wonder if Darwin would disown his cousin Travis?
You got a source for a natural scientist who scientifically rejects the Genesis account while at the same time, on the basis of natural science, accepts the Aboriginal creation account?
Hey, go to a "dreamtime" web site and see how "scientific" it is! At any rate, I've noticed that scientific attacks on "mythology" are almost 100% focused on Genesis and not on any other "myth."
Either only Genesis is false, only "rednecks" believe their creation myths, or else scientists are disproportionately bothered by what white people believe (as opposed to anyone else). What are we, more evolved than "quaint" little black and brown people and thus supposedly "beyond" all that silly stuff?
Chuckling. I gather, then, the answer is no, you don’t have a source for what you described. Just your opinion. Works for me.
That the Christian creation story attracts the most attention from scientists is not at all remarkable from where I sit. When one third of the earth’s inhabitants are nominally Christian, the religion will receive closer scrutiny than the creation story of, say, Zoroastrianism.
My sister believes in evolution, she is athiest. I am Christian and I believe God created me. I told her that if she wants to believe she evolved from a monkey that is fine with me, but God created me. That did shut her up.
One need only peruse Darwinian literature to see how clearly this general attitude comes through in their writings. While they say they vehemently oppose "religion", their bile is mostly reserved for "religion" which is based on the Old and New testaments. This is a vast topic and I'm glad you bring it up. An entire website could be done about it. For example, while T.H. Huxley had the most disgusting things to say about Catholics and the Salvation Army or anyone who takes the Bible seriously, he did have a warm spot for 'enlightened Buddhism'. Vilification of Christianity and simultaneous admiration of the "superior" ethical teachings of Buddhism and Chinese paganism is to be found in Pearson's writings too. But there are massive loads of that in the Monist Journal. Compiling all the examples would be a major undertaking. Basically the Jews and Christians are portrayed as ignorant savages and mindless degenerate fanatics, respectively. And anything good that came from them was plagiarized from eastern sages or polynesian animism or whatever. Islam gets the nod from time to time. Why, I just read the other day, in a 19th century chemistry book, how the ignorant Christian europeans stopped the progress of science for centuries when they (tragically) defeated the muslims at Tours and eventually kicked them out of Spain. But for a more recent example, there is always Susan Blackmore the Buddhist-loving, Christian hating evolutionist:
More recently American philosopher Daniel Dennett has described the process as the evolutionary algorithm a simple mindless process that once the requisites are in place must happen. If you have heredity, variation and selection then you must get evolution or Design out of Chaos without the aid of Mind (ref). Its as simple as that. And it works the other way too: some Buddhists (especially the western ones) love this Darwin stuff because they can put themselves on a "more scientific than thou" pedestal. Like the Marxists and their "scientific atheism", they finally found repose in a faith backed by Science. Where as us dumb Christians and Jews are stuck with those anti-science Biblical invisible memetic mind-parasites (funny how these guys believe in such things.)I began deliberately with a very simple virus but there are far more powerful ones that use exactly the same structure. Dawkins calls them viruses of the mind; he means religions.
Dawkins used the example of Roman Catholicism; a collection of basic teachings that are passed on in church, by learning the catechism, and through prayer, singing hymns and saying grace. Beautiful cathedrals tempt worshippers inside and lift their hearts, making them want to spread the memes again. Beautiful music and songs carry the words of God and Jesus to more ears and minds. Good Catholics pass on all these truths to their children and are encouraged to have lots of children who must, in turn, marry (or convert) a Catholic and bring up their children in the faith. The reward is everlasting life and the punishment well its even worse than having your hard disk wiped. In addition the threats and promises are untestable. God can see all you do but you cannot see him. Heaven and hell are only to be seen when you die and cannot come back to let on that it was all a hoax. No wonder such religions and their doctrines fill our world and have survived for thousands of years.
Meditation is the hoe. Meditation is also, of course, a meme. You would never have invented the techniques of Chan meditation for yourself. They have been part-invented and part-selected over thousands of years, passing down from person to person in a long evolutionary path. But all of them have this in common - they are ways of defusing the power of other memes. John's wonderfully simple instruction "Let it come; Let it be; Let it go" is a meme-weeding meme. Any other meme that pops up is met with the same response. Its power to stir up your mind is interfered with. Its features designed to get you to store it and pass it on, no longer work so well. "Let it go" gets in its way and the cycle of meme-repetition is broken.
Understanding BuddhismYou should read that whole page. It's pretty interesting."We have the power to defy the selfish genes of our birth and, if necessary, the selfish memes of our indoctrination. We can even discuss ways of deliberately cultivating and nurturing pure, disinterested altruism - something that has no place in nature, something that has never existed before in the whole history of the world. We are built as gene machines and cultured as meme machines, but we have the power to turn against our creators. We, alone on earth, can rebel against the tyranny of the selfish replicators." - Richard Dawkins 'The Selfish Gene' [1]
In these four sentences Professor Dawkins [2] has described both the scientific view of the 'human condition', and the main motivations for following the Buddhist path.
