Palin's teen daughter wishes pregnancy came later

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Bristol Palin loves motherhood, but the teenage daughter of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin says she's not getting much sleep these days.

Bristol Palin says in a two-part interview on Fox News Channel's "On the Record" that she wishes her pregnancy had "happened in, like, 10 years so I could have a job and an education and be, like, prepared and have my own house and stuff."

Palin goes on to say that son Tripp, born Dec. 27, brings her so much joy, she doesn't regret having him at all. She's engaged to the baby's father, Levi Johnston.

The governor also made an appearance in the interview, which took place Sunday in Fairbanks.

Part one of the interview aired Monday night and the second part was scheduled to air Tuesday night.

Young people who conceive a child SHOULD commit to providing the child with a mother and a father, either themselves or an adoptive family who can provide those things.

But, since we’re talking about people who have already decided to do something they SHOULDN’T have, how likely are they to care about what they ought to do?

As a rule, they’ll stumble through it with the same self-indulgence and lack of foresight which got them into that situation, barring strong intervention by someone about whose opinion they care.

A Bastard is the child of unmarried parents. I am simply using the dictionary definition...

The hell you are. You made an inflammatory statement, and you've been trying to back away from it all thread.

Its possible these two teenagers are not married because they are not equipped by education or job to go start a separate household

Given what happened to Levi's mother, I wouldn't want my daughter and grandchild living in her house

And maybe the governor and first dude don't want or expect in a married couple to live in her house, either

If my kid got married, I'd expect them to go live with their spouse and start a separate household- but maybe that's just me. I do think the governor is more indulgent than I'd be about insisting the girl at least finish her GED. A bright kid can get that done quickly if they want to.

Yep, they lied. Several freepers got nasty with those who said marriage was not in the cards. If not how this scandal was handled (like parading Levi at the convention), Palin might have attracted many more voters.

Anyone who didn't vote for Sarah because her teenaged, legal aged, daughter got herself pregnant, are the real bastards, not Tripp.

Nope, can't let you get away with that. I made NO inflammatory statement and I CLARIFIED what I said. I am not backing out on what I never intended to say. YOU are the one who want it to mean what it was never intended to mean.

Thank you, I had forgotten about 0. However I don’t think the use of the word bastard is really used anymore. Illegitimate child sounds better but even that isn’t used too much. A child is a child & IMHO shouldn’t be blamed for what it’s parents did.

If your stepson’s parents are not married to each other, he already knows what he is and he knows what others might think he is.... he will learn to deal with it one way or the other

It doesn’t matter what other people say- or don’t say, inside the kids process it in their own way

(speaking as a parent who has adopted 2 kids born out of wedlock and sometimes struggling with their identity and self worth and the choices their birth parents made for them)

So, is the best course of action in this case, for the sake of the child, to simply leave things the way they are ? Let Sarah and husband help take care of their grandchild ?

What about Levi's responsibilities ?

Trig is Sarah's son. Tripp is Bristol's son.

Don't forget Track. Trig, Tripp and Track -- could be a name for a law firm!

Looking at the way things seem to be going for the Palins, I’d say adoption is probably the best option for the child.

Uh huh. If so, then perhaps you should choose your words more carefully in the first place.

However, your responses show that you were in fact quite deliberate in your choice of words. You had to have known the sort of response you'd get.

Sorry, FRiend, I don't believe your disclaimer.

You easily could have used illegitimate child instead of bastard. Illegitimate child is the term that has been used for children born out of wedlock for a long time now. Bastard is from the old, old days.

I just joined the discussion, and I hesitated just because it seems lately any thread gets so derogatory/nasty. I’d much rather discuss rationally.

“what should young people like these do when their baby is born out of wedlock ?” “Should the guy marry the girl or should he not marry her ? What would be best for society and for the child ?”

What do you think?

I think families should handle this stuff, without government intervention (including money).

I only know what we do in our family (or at least what we’ve done. Even our family has changed somewhat).

Take care of the baby, with family help, just like always. Not sure if the teens should marry. Nothing about the guy marrying the girl, it’s a consensual decision to marry or not. Marriage is a Sacrament. Not something one should go into without much thought and prayer. And not something one should do just because of a pregnancy/baby.

Palin is a public figure now so what goes on in her family is going to be reported and discussed and in some cases trashed.

I agree; illegitimacy is indeed a handicap, one which some children surmount—as indicated by the list above—but is something which will negatively affect the child’s development.

Noting the negative consequences of this is like noting the fact that a child is near-sighted—it’s not a moral judgment of the child, but it is an acknowledgement of the handicap.

Destigmatising illegitimacy, in my mind, is like trying to destigmatise myopia—the kid with glasses is always going to know he lacks something important, dress it up however you like.

Now, having said that, we don’t approve of other kids taunting the kid with glasses, or let that be the whole measure of that child’s worth.

Levi’s responsibility is to provide a father for the baby—perhaps that means manning up to the fact that he can’t hack that job right now.

First of all, I think it is great that she had the baby but OMG, these poor people from Alaska are white trash. I listened to Bristol on Greta's show and she said that abstinence does not work. Well as the saying goes, “it works every time it is tried.” She said that it is not realistic but I have 2 nieces that are 19 and 23 and they are abstinent. The fact of the matter is that the mother (Sarah) was not watching the daughter and Levi and they did the nasty. My sister watches my nieces and they are abstinent. I just wish Sarah would stop killing animals and watch her kids better.
