SAN JOSE -- The pilot of a United Airlines jetliner preparing for take-off this morning out of Mineta San Jose International Airport stopped the plane and shut off one of its engines after striking a flock of seagulls.
United jet safely stops takeoff at San Jose airport after bird strike 02.16.09
Flight No. 1220 - carrying 97 passengers and bound for Denver - was rolling down the runway at 120 knots, or 138.2 miles per hour, when it hit the birds at 7: 15 a.m., said United spokeswoman Robin Urbanski.
She said the pilot turned off one of the plane's two engines and used the other engine to taxi back to the gate.

These airline mishaps always seem to happen in bunches. Hopefully this’ll be the last one for a while.

Not sure what it was run with today. Between the 12th and the 15th, UAL1220 has used an Airbus A319, a Boeing 737-300, and a Boeing 757-200 (according to flightaware.com).

You’re allowed to laugh. No one got hurt!
I was on a flight with an aborted takeoff once. It was a little prop plane (8 passengers?), and an alarm sounded just as we were rotating. We rotated back down and taxied to the gate. Hearing the alarm at that moment was a little frightening...

after striking a flock of seagulls. Did the passengers run so far away? If only this story could have been written back in 1981.

Usually there aren’t too many seagulls around San Jose, but the stormy weather we’ve been having always drives them inland. I saw a big bunch of ‘em having a picnic at the dumpster behind Denny’s yesterday.

The enviro-idiots are gaining power with the Mighty 0 now as president. They’ll now be clamoring to close all these airports which have bird habitats nearby.
