Bill would end Kansas death penalty

A state lawmaker wants to see the Kansas death penalty abolished to help close the state’s projected budget shortfall of $199 million.

State Sen. Caroline McGinn introduced the bill, saying lawmakers “need to be thinking out of the box” to save money. The Sedgwick Republican said the death penalty hasn’t proven to be a deterrent to crime, and there’s always the risk of executing an innocent person.

The Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled hearings Feb. 26-27 on the bill that says nobody could be sentenced to death after July 1.

Death penalty foes on Thursday said that given the current budget problems, executions are too expensive and unnecessary because Kansas has an alternative -- life in prison without parole.

In a 2003 state audit of 22 first-degree murder cases found that the median cost for those leading to the death penalty was $1.2 million. That compared with $740,000 for the median non-death penalty cases reviewed.

I thought this was an interesting proposal given today's news of delayed tax refunds in Kansas.

Don't live there but, if I did, it sure would be tempting to ask the warden to just go into death row and "inject 'em all TONIGHT"

So, Kansas is ending the death penalty, and withholding tax refunds to its citizens?

Bad week for the citizens of Kansas.

Gotta save money, gotta save money. Let’s see, what can we do? I’ve got a great idea: let’s kill more innocent babies and quit killing convicted murderers. How do I come up with such brilliant ideas? It just goes to show how intellectually and morally superior we Democrats are.

I prefer politicians that think inside the box on this issue.

So, have they considered what it will cost the taxpayers to support, feed and amuse a 20 year old inmate that lives to a ripe old age of 90? Got to be more then the $1.2 million.

So, this is one of the reasons why the Governor of Kansas still isn’t officially in the Obama administration as the next head of the Department of Health and Human Services?

Really? Perhaps this fool would show the citizens the Police Report on the last convict executed that came back to life and committed another crime?
I know I can show her the records of persons sentenced to “life” that were released and murdered again.

I am sick and tired of hearing how expensive the death penalty is. That is because it is not carried out appropriately. I can assure you that I could design a system to implement the death penalty that would be very tax payer freindly...

What would it cost to keep those 22 in prison for a life sentence?

Oh. I forgot....they're liberals and they would let the murderers out on parole after a couple ears in the slammer.

Never mind the added cost of repeat offenders (frequent fliers).

Send ‘em to Texas. We have about 200 open dates on the 2009 calendar. $25,000 each (quantity discounts available) and we’ll throw in the pine box and pay the return shipping. You gotta bury them up there.
