As for W4 exemptions, I discussed this with my accountant this year, and he told me that for every exemption, you get approx $23 more takehome per pay period. I bumped mine up and saw about half that. I get paid weekly, though. This might make a difference.

I heard somewhere that no red flags are raised at the IRS until you get into the 11 range.

You are LEGALLY ENTITLED to having less withholding if you got a refund in the previous year. Remember that.
