State budget plan stalls, one vote short

SACRAMENTO — One vote shy of a budget deal, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Sunday pressured reluctant Republicans in the Legislature to pass a complex plan to close the state's $42 billion deficit. The head of the Assembly locked down the chamber, forcing members to remain as the measure stalled in the Senate. Republicans are unwilling to raise taxes to deal with the state's historic deficit, but at least three GOP votes were needed in each house for the two-thirds majority required to pass the budget. Senate leaders thought they had enough votes lined up to ensure passage, which meant three Republican votes were needed. The Sacramento Bee reported Sunday morning that in a preliminary roll call on Saturday night, Senate GOP leader Dave Cogdill was the only Republican to cast an "aye" vote on a key piece of the budget puzzle. Bakersfield Republican Roy Ashburn, thought to be a swing vote, abstained, while every other Republican senator opposed the budget bill. Ashburn is expected to support the budget plan once a third GOP vote emerges.

So, did it pass in the Assembly?

So that scum Gogdill threw in with them. I wonder what kind of cushy government job Arnold and the Dems are going to give him after he gets kicked out of office?

IIRC, wasn't the media reporting in Dec. '08 that the budget shortfall was only $18-$22 billion? What happened to the budget number in 8 short weeks?

Libs' new math? Budget gang raped by the legislators? Auto kickbacks now figured in if the 'new deal' is passed? Porkulus already siring new offspring?

Ashburn is quickly dashing all the high regard I once held for him! What a shameful elected official!! I guess they all weaken eventually under the relentless pressure and the lonliness of being committed to principles!!!

Good grief, even Dave Cox who is not even a "hard over right-wing nut"(sic) is standing by the other courageous Republicans, especially the courageous conservatives!!! The news on T.V. portrays him as a miserable grinchey bastard with no legitimacy whatever for his position, yet he states right into the camera: "MY MIND IS MADE UP!!! THE PEOPLE OF CA ARE ALREADY TAXED ENOUGH!!!"

God bless you Senator Cox for trying so hard to save CA from rampant leftist Liberalism!!! Darrel Steinberg (Senate Pro Tem) sucks wretched canal water!!! (spit!)

I suspect they blow out the number by talking about what the deficit will be at some future point in time. By making it look like we’re upside down by $42 billion, it makes it easier to claim cuts alone won’t resolve the budget issues.

We’re talking major wimps and assholes in Sacramento.

We have doubled the budget in a short period of time. They can’t tell me that they can’t roll back some of those increases without causing calamity in the state.

We’re only talking about rolling back the budget by eighteen months to three years.

When they talk about cuts, I know they are only talking about cutting the planned increases, while they raise the $15 billion or so that would need to be cut, by raising taxes through the roof.

My wife runs a non-profit that helps grownups function with Down Syndrome and a few other diagnoses. Some of their operating budget comes from the state. That portion of her budget has been frozen for over a decade. Now they want to cut her funding by 5 to 12%.

Instead of cutting those whose budgets doubled or more in the last ten years, they are going after folks who lived within their budgets all along.

It baffles the mind, the idiotic reasoning of our state officials. When we see the things they have cut, while the leave other pet areas be, there is going to be major anger in this state.

We’ll be right back here next year too. They simply will not stop spending more all the time, on things they want to.

John and Ken, local talk radio hosts here in L.A., are leading a tax revolt with the motto, “RECALL, REPEAL, REVOLT!” It's gathering a lot of steam from fed-up taxpayers.

Arnold (RINO) should be the first to go!

That's how they create the mythical "spending cuts." Simply add a big number to the projected spending level, say $10 billion or so, then eliminate it and call it a "cut."

But also, I believe the $18 billion number was the projection for ending this fiscal year. The budgets now being negotiated are for an adjustment to this year, as well as the following full year.

Maldonado is actually holding firm.

At first I was surprised. But when he keeps railing on the Controllers Office purchase of new furniture (workstations), I concluded that the Able lapdog must want to run for Controller. If he voted yes on this monster, he could kiss his chances goodbye.
