President Barack Obama, savouring his first major victory in Congress, said Saturday that newly passed $787 billion economic stimulus legislation marks a "major milestone on our road to recovery."
Speaking in his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama said, "I will sign this legislation into law shortly, and well begin making the immediate investments necessary to put people back to work doing the work America needs done."
At the same time, he cautioned, "This historic step wont be the end of what we do to turn our economy around, but rather the beginning. The problems that led us into this crisis are_deep and widespread, and our response must be equal to the task."
The bill passed Congress on Friday on_party-line votes, allowing Democratic leaders to deliver on their promise of clearing the legislation by mid-February.
Obama "now has a bill to sign that will create millions of good-paying jobs and help families and businesses stay afloat financially," said Sen. Max Baucus, a Montana Democrat who was a leading architect of the measure.
"It will shore up our schools and roads and bridges, and infuse cash into new sectors like green energy and technology that will sustain our economy for the long term," he added in a statement.
Hours earlier, Senate_Republican_Leader Mitch McConnell offered a different prediction for a bill he said was loaded with wasteful spending.
"A stimulus bill that was supposed to be timely, targeted and temporary is none of the above," he said in remarks on the Senate floor. "And this means Congress is about to approve a stimulus thats unlikely to have much stimulative effect."
Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, in the Republican radio address Saturday, contended Democrats settled "on a random dollar amount in the neighbourhood of $1 trillion and then set out to fill the bucket."

There isn't a Communist/Socialist politician ever to exist that could stop the salivating before making such a statement after taking a position of power.
Are you sure he did not say millstone?
It’s a milestone alright...unfortunately it is leading to a tombstone. USA 1776-2009 RIP.
A major milestone?
It’s a major HEADSTONE for our Republic.
I wonder how Barry thinks we will be able to compete with global manufacturing. After union membership and insane work rules are forced on companys, this plan will be a job killer. The demise of steel, auto, and electronics manufacturing should have taught us.
You answered your own question.
Short and sweet, we won't be able to compete and "BARRY" knows it!
Just take your incentive package and move on for crying out loud. ; )
That's the right thing to do in any economy. In fact it is economy.
Milestone? More like a giant national gallstone.
Yeah, I almost had a knock down drag out fight against my girlfriend’s lib father. We almost broke up, and I almost broke his legs. Next time, it might happen. Good luck talking to libs.
Just a friendly spelling reminder: losing
What he won was cramming this down our throats, it was a test to see how much he could get away with and he is right after getting away with this he “has only just begun”.
God help us.
Major MILLstone
“Just the beginning”, Barry? Thanks for the warning. I think.
Somewhere someone calculated the price of the Porkulus and how much each American - man, woman, child - would owe to pay for it.
“Very well said! Buy only necessities and don’t borrow. I believe that it’s the right thing to do in this economy anyway.”
Living conservatively is the right thing to do in any economy. There are just some exclamation points being added to it of late.
“Good luck talking to libs.”
You’re attempting to persuade True Believers that their way is not the path to enlightenment. It ain’t gonna happen. Better to make sure you don’t end up drinking the koolaid along with them.

Major millstone is more like it.
Absolutely. Starve the beast. It’s the only way, since they will not listen to us (even our own Republicans back in September when this boondoggle started).
