A man accused of lighting the Churchill-Jeerelang bushfire in Gippsland, in Victoria's east has been remanded in custody.
The fire started in plantation near Churchill on Saturday and quickly spread to nearby communities. Twenty-one people are confirmed to have died in that fire.
The man was arrested this morning and taken to the Morwell police station where he was questioned for several hours.
He has been charged with one count of arson causing death, one count of intentionally lighting a bushfire and one count of possessing child pornography.
The man did not appear in court.

Abdul?
this is such an atrocity....
Or Abdul Mohammed, maybe?
Given the media's OUTRIGHT REFUSAL to acknowledge ANYTHING about the suspect, my money says it's a probably a muslim or "immigrant youth" of some form.
It’s not the media - if they’re not reporting it’s because they don’t know (very possible as the person did not appear in court) or they’ve been asked to suppress by police or ther courts.
B. Hussein ...?
“He has been charged with one count of arson causing death, one count of intentionally lighting a bushfire and one count of possessing child pornography.”
The official death toll of all the fires is 181 - it is likely that once all bodies are recovered, that number will be closer to 300. But that was from multiple fires - this one, which this man has been charged with starting, has a current death toll of 21 associated with it.
The man is 39 years old and his name has been suppressed either by the police or the courts. I don’t know why - it may be just because he hasn’t faced a proper court hearing yet (he will on Monday) and it’s not uncommon for details to be suppressed until that occurs, it may be that there’s something else going on.
Until I am proven otherwise, I will maintain my theory.
"AUSTRALIA has been singled out as a target for "forest jihad" by a group of Islamic extremists urging Muslims to deliberately light bushfirs as a weapon of terror. US intelligence channels earlier this year identified a website calling on Muslims in Australia, the US, Europe and Russia to "start forest fires", claiming "scholars have justified chopping down and burning the infidels' forests when they do the same to our lands". The website, posted by a group called the Al-Ikhlas Islamic Network, argues in Arabic that lighting fires is an effective form of terrorism justified in Islamic law under the "eye for an eye" doctrine. The posting - which instructs jihadis to remember "forest jihad" in summer months - says fires cause economic damage and pollution, tie up security agencies and can take months to extinguish so that "this terror will haunt them for an extended period of time."

The problem is we have deliberately lit bushfires all the time here - on any given summer day, there are about 20 bushfires in Victoria and half of those are deliberately lit. They are lit by local firebugs, not by terrorists. It’s a major problem we know a lot about.
The assumption that last Saturday the local firebugs had all vanished just doesn’t hold water. They would have been just as active as ever.
Terrorist involvement certainly can’t be ruled out. But even if there were terrorists lighting some of these fires, it would only be some of those deliberately lit, and that’s only some of the fires.
Sorry - that's 200 bushfires a day.
A public hanging would be appropriate. Better yet, boiling in oil.
