True Cost of Stimulus: $3.27 Trillion
Heritage Foundation ^ | 2-12-09 | Conn Carroll

Posted on 02/12/2009 8:41:40 PM PST by VinL

All of the major news outlets are reporting that the stimulus bill voted out of conference committee last night has a meager $789 billion price tag. This number is pure fantasy. No one believes that the increased funding for programs the left loves like Head Start, Medicaid, COBRA, and the Earned Income Tax Credit is in anyway temporary. No Congress under control of the left will ever cut funding for these programs. So what is the true cost of the stimulus if these spending increases are made permanent?

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) asked the Congressional Budget Office to estimate the impact of permanently extending the 20 most popular provisions of the stimulus bill. What did the CBO find? As you can see from the table below, the true 10 year cost of the stimulus bill $2.527 trillion in in spending with another $744 billion cost in debt servicing. Total bill for the Generational Theft Act: $3.27 trillion.

You know, the GOP could derail this payola/graft Bill tomorrow by proposing to offer a $20,000 check to each US taxpayer. Comes out to about $3.5T- unless my zeroes are off. _:)

I mean if PresO is going to play Bob Barker, and the Dems are going to buy votes with our money- the GOP should go them one better-- offer the plebs a bigger bribe-- sorry, I mean stimulus check. -:)

Newsweak had a cover reading that “We Are All Socialists Now”.

In reality, it should have read “We Are All Rape Victims Now”...

Remember when “We’re Spending Our Grandchildren’s Inheritance” was just a funny bumper sticker on RVs?

You know, how much did the GOP add to the Federal debt during the Bush reign. Comes out to about $3.5T.

Not questioning your math but how many tax payers did you use in your equation? Tax payers now, not just adult citizens.

I thought the cobra provision a mandate that employers had to pay 50% to 75% of COBRA for laid off employees?

I mean, that’s not a tax, is it?

Unless you are an employer.

Lex, doesn’t have to be secession. -:) Could just be “Red State Union”- a confederacy of like minded red states that will support each other politically and economically to oppose socialist Washington. Unite the forces of Barbour, Sanford, Jindal, Palin and others like minded to demonstrate the superiority of free enterprise over sttatism.

**************

My recollection was that about 150M rec’d $500.00 stimulus checks in ‘08. But, don’t trust my math. -:)

My point was that if the GOP says - give the money to people directly- the peeps would love it—and the Dems wouldn’t get any benefit.

I agree, make the stimulus bill a cool $100 trillion for all I care.

Socialized medicine? Sure, throw that in there.

Instant Amnesty to 30 million illegals? Heck ya.

$2 Billion gift to A.C.O.R.N. for a job well done? Why the hell not.

Nationalize the banks, and insurance companies and go ahead and buy up all the car manufacturers and oh hell! let's just have the Gov't buy up ALL businesses period. You betcha!

$40 Billion each to Kahleefonea, and Mass. and NY and NJ and PA and Wisconsin and Illinois (hmmm, those are all democrat stronghold states- weird.) Git-r-done.

What in the Lords name will America be like in 20 years?

Indeed! And one of these days I'm going to purchase a 67/68 Camaro with a 327.

Why stop at 10 years?
Why not figure the cost for 15 years?
Or 40 years?

One arbitrary time period’s as good as another, don’t you think?

Yeah, on the bright side, "Conservatives" seem to once again care about Federal spending and debt.

All it took was having the Democrats take over our government.

COBRA entitles you to continue your medical insurance - at your own expense - for I think 90 days after your employment ceases.
It’s only “Subsidized” to the extent that you’re allowed to purchase it at the same price your employer paid.

It ain’t cheap.
