Senator Gregg Statement on His Withdrawal for Consideration of U.S. Commerce Secretary
Sen. Gregg stated, I want to thank the President for nominating me to serve in his Cabinet as Secretary of Commerce. This was a great honor, and I had felt that I could bring some views and ideas that would assist him in governing during this difficult time. I especially admire his willingness to reach across the aisle.
However, it has become apparent during this process that this will not work for me as I have found that on issues such as the stimulus package and the Census there are irresolvable conflicts for me. Prior to accepting this post, we had discussed these and other potential differences, but unfortunately we did not adequately focus on these concerns. We are functioning from a different set of views on many critical items of policy.
Obviously the President requires a team that is fully supportive of all his initiatives.
I greatly admire President Obama and know our country will benefit from his leadership, but at this time I must withdraw my name from consideration for this position.
As we move forward, I expect there will be many issues and initiatives where I can and will work to assure the success of the Presidents proposals. This will certainly be a goal of mine.
Kathy and I also want to specifically thank Governor Lynch and Bonnie Newman for their friendship and assistance during this period. In addition we wish to thank all the people, especially in New Hampshire, who have been so kind and generous in their supportive comments.
As a further matter of clarification, nothing about the vetting process played any role in this decision. I will continue to represent the people of New Hampshire in the United States Senate.
Glad Obama got stuck on this one but Gregg looks BAD. No way he didn’t know what he was getting into. I sure hope the GOP replaces him in 2010. Obama may look bad in this one but Gregg looks worse.
I'll second that.
Going to re-run this for clarity and 'emphasis'. . .
Am wondering if disagreement over 'policy issues' included this stomach ache. Suspect it does - per following headline at American Thinker.
Commerce Department Unilaterally Lifts Some Sanctions Against Syria. . .

Now what?
They cant find a dem that’s paid taxes.
To me, neither Obama or Gregg looks good in this. A lot of intrigue that went wrong. Gregg is rumored to be not running for re-election in 2010, so this may end up as a Dem pickup seat in two years. I think Gregg is the only conservative republican left in the northeast.
I think the Twin Jezebels have NO sense at all. Talk about STUPID!
And what about Arlen Sphincter?
No. Not only do they not have consciences, their right/wrong judgment go into negative numbers.
Taking a Cabinet seat from the senate and/or the opposition party is a total career ender. Examples: William Saxbe, Edmund Muskie, James Schlesinger, David Gergen, William Cohen..
Too bad he didn’t stay and then blow the whistle on them all
Judd Gregg snaked the snakes in the White House who were too clever by half. Talking about you Rahm and Axelrod
Their obvious scam was to make a Republican take the blame when Comrade 0’s Soviet style economic plans come a cropper
The only thing that has changed since Greg said he would take the job is his being humiliated by emanuel over the Census
Thanks!
Does Gregg just slide back into his Senate seat?
Good for Gregg.
Isn’t this the third cabinet person that has withdrawn?
I completely disagree! Obama looks like the partisan, jerk tyrant that he is. Gregg looks like someone as disgusted with the non-stimulus massive democrat spending bill and the census power grab as the rest of America.
I don’t know for sure, but I remember reading that being asked to serve the President was an honor that one did not reject out of respect for the office. I also don’t recall anyone turning down an appointment in the past, after it has been made public. Maybe it has happened and I just don’t recall my history well enough, but I think doing something like this is considered a real offense (etiquette-wise)and usually just does not happen. Wonder who Obama can convince to take this job now?
As I said on another thread, Drudge deserves credit for a great (and honest) headline. The rest of the media will be spinning this to make Obama look good, as we’ve already seen.
Also, I love the gentlemanly way that Gregg puts this. It makes Obama look all the worse. :-)
Political double speak.
If you are so against the polciies of the stimulus package and Census (as well you should be) that you must withdraw (not to mention the Syria issue) on principle, you cannot say out of the other side of your mouth that this nation will benefit from his leadership.
I am glad Senator that you are withdrawing on principle, but you also can't have it both ways.
Fact is, Obama is a marxist ideolog whose policies will be terrible for this nation...a disaster.
