Action heroes and their times (Free Republic mentioned)

It's almost a month since Capt. Chesley (Sully) Sullenberger saved 155 lives, including his own, by landing a disabled Airbus 320 on the Hudson River right beside Manhattan.

Since then, he's been on 60 Minutes and was presented, along with four other crewmembers, with the keys to New York City by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

There have also been calls on the conservative forum Free Republic for a burger chain to offer a special Flight 1549 combo featuring the Sullen Burger, served cool, along with an action figure of the hero pilot thrown in as a prize.

WOW...they didn't bash us or label us "Rightwing extremists" (at least in the opening paragraph I read...didn't go to the site and read the rest).. This has to be a first.

Great idea, btw, whichever FReeper came up with it.

When I saw the words, "action hero" and "Freerepublic", I thought you were talking about "Captain Obvious".

I’ve often thought that the United States should have a medal, roughly equal to the Congressional Medal of Honor, to award to outstanding heroes who are not members of the armed forces, but who have shown valor at risk of their lives far beyond the call of duty and who’s actions have saved numerous lives.

Some people might argue that Sully wouldn’t qualify because he was saving his own life at the same time, and it’s not like he had much of a choice in the situation. But I think he would. I’d definitely approve if such a medal was awarded to him.

Not the same.

The Medal of Freedom carries too much political baggage. Presidents of both parties have given it to people who have made worthy contributions, to be sure, but who’s actions don’t measure up to the standard I am talking about.

Call it the Congressional Medal of Valor.

New cocktail honors Captain Sully:

Two shots of Grey Goose, and a splash of cold water

Just add a floating lemon wedge topped with some stale peanuts and you’re set.
