Bush-era offshore drilling plan is set aside for energy

WASHINGTON - The Obama administration on Tuesday overturned another Bush-era energy policy, announcing it was setting aside a draft plan to allow drilling off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.

"To establish an orderly process that allows us to make wise decisions based on sound information, we need to set aside" the plan "and create our own timeline," Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced in a statement.

Environmentalists and some tourism-dependent coastal states oppose the drilling, citing the potential for spills and urging an emphasis on renewable energy instead. Energy companies counter that drilling has become safer over the years and that royalties from any finds would be in the billions of dollars.

I’m guessing somewhere between the 2-3 dollar mark for this year. I don’t think it will get to the $4 range in 09, as we did last year; but I could be wrong.

Waiting for oil prices to recover a bit before we run the auctions would probably be in both the taxpayers' and consumers' best interests. Would you agree?

It would also mean even longer for oil to be produced. While at the same time exploration continues in other countries. Along with the jobs that exploration and construction of production facilities.

I think it is in America's interest to open up our resources for production. I think the amount received for the higher lease bids would be small compared to the taxes and royalties raised on production already in place later when the price climb back up.

Yesterday the greatest question was decided which ever was debated in America; and a greater perhaps never was, nor will be, decided among men. A resolution was passed without one dissenting colony, “that these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States.”

Obama just stuck a knife in the back every unemployed worker in Elkhart and flipped them the finger on their way to the ground.

True, but the first thing the brainwashed Obamatrons will think to do is call their hero for more help.

For now, we have life but the RATS are close to sucking the life out of this country.

Yes, they seem determined to make sure everyone knows big-government Democrats suck even harder and faster than big-government "Republicans."

It’s a buzz phrase, like “working families”, “middle-class tax cuts”, and “socially responsible.”

My prediction is $3.10/gal by August.

And $3.90 by January 2010 (1 year of Obama in office)

Amazing how short of an attention span we have as a nation. We must have collective ADHD.

When the prices jump again, along with the economic mess, the wailing and moaning is going to be out of this world. I guess that'll let the Dems nationalize the oil industry ala Chavez. Then again, what happens to oil if our economy completely tanks...the Chinese and Indians may bolster demand but will they also go down with us enough to keep world oil demand depressed...

Indeed, they seem to want to have unemployment compensation equal to the wage that they received while working. These people are awful. Note that I'm not saying they're not needy, just awful in their thinking. If they had their way in Indiana, for example, businesses and productive individuals would flee Indiana rather than pay the sharply increased taxes that such compensation would seem to require.

Well that should give the economy a boost! Now how many billions will we have to spend to replace the lost jobs? Of course the oil to replace this will have to be bought from first friend Chavez.

It was never a viable concept in the first place. There is no nation on this planet thats industrialized that is ‘energy independent’ and there never will be.

Its a fools errand talking point.

Hmmmm - So you know that there are no energy discoveries or advancements ever to be made for the rest of time that would provide a supply solution to the world. Remarkable.

You will not have energy development in this country until you end the control of Congress by the so-called “environmentalists”.

You're an economist at UW, commenting on oil drilling with riveting statements like even if, probably wouldn't, no oil company would... and don't know that Chevron just found 300 ft deep of oil in the Gulf of Mexico, and other companies are in the middle of building pipelines for oil and natural gas.

The oil companies have enough common sense to not wait until they are bone dry before they spend billions on exploration, and the last president we had, that happened to have earned a Masters in Business Administration at a time when diplomas meant more than agreeing with some tenured hippie, agreed in this basic concept.

Obama/Pelosi's plan is to drain the strategic reserve, then ride bikes.

Look to the experts in the field who bet their vast experience and own money on being right, and take whatever that political science experiment of a university teaches you as idle chatter.

The stupidity that can be found on the internet never ceases to amaze me.

Typical institutionalized lefty. Zero research on the topic, and when you get challenged to qualify your statements, you hide behind kindergarten trash talk.
