Critical Threats: Blank When None
Cheney warns of new attacks

Former Vice President Dick Cheney warned that there is a “high probability” that terrorists will attempt a catastrophic nuclear or biological attack in coming years, and said he fears the Obama administration’s policies will make it more likely the attempt will succeed.

In an interview Tuesday with Politico, Cheney unyieldingly defended the Bush administration’s support for the Guantanamo Bay prison and coercive interrogation of terrorism suspects.

And he asserted that President Obama will either backtrack on his stated intentions to end those policies or put the country at risk in ways more severe than most Americans — and, he charged, many members of Obama’s own team — understand.

“When we get people who are more concerned about reading the rights to an Al Qaeda terrorist than they are with protecting the United States against people who are absolutely committed to do anything they can to kill Americans, then I worry,” Cheney said.

Just to let y’all know...I had a first-hand report of suspicious activity at a semi-local recruiting office. A ME man was filming the exterior. When he knew he’d been made, he stepped into the business next door and stayed for a while. But he propped the camera up and it continued to record. All pertinent alphabet agencies were notified, but it was really disconcerting for all involved.

According to another forum, Dr. Guan Yi is one of the leading scientists on flu viruses.

Guan Yi, Microbiologist, University of Hong Kong:

“Obviously the virus is already endemic in some countries. The virus is very mild, but this is just one option. In the 1918 (Spanish flu) pandemic, the first wave was mild, but by fall, the second wave killed many people. So whichever way this virus swings, we can’t possibly know.

At this point, chances are it will be mild, but we can’t rule out it will turn virulent. And even if it turns milder, it can still kill, depending on the kind of person it infects.

And who is to say it will not reassort with H5N1? In a pandemic, infection rates will be much higher than seasonal flu and chances of this virus meeting and mixing with H5N1 are far higher. If it goes to Egypt, Indonesia, these H5N1 endemic regions, it could turn into a very powerful H5N1 that is very transmissible among people. Then we will be in trouble, it will be a tragedy.

For now we need to limit transmission and treat patients, isolate them and quarantine them. We are much better able to handle this after SARS and so many H5N1 episodes, this is for certain, and we have antivirals that work.”

This is a bigger threat to the United States than Mexican swine flu:

“The White House ^ | 2/4/09 | US Immigration and Customs Enforcement

“Obama funds $20M tax payer dollars to immigrate Hamas Refugees to the USA This is the news that didn’t make the headlines... By executive order, President Barack Obama has ordered the expenditure of $20.3 million in migration assistance to the Palestinian refugees and conflict victims in Gaza .

The “presidential determination” which allows

hundreds of thousands of Palestinians with ties to Hamas to resettle in the United States

was signed on January 27 and appeared in the Federal Register on February 4.

Few on Capitol Hill took note that the order provides a free ticket replete with housing and food allowances to individuals who have displayed their overwhelming support of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in the parliamentary election of January 2006.

A review of Barack Obama’s most recent actions since he was inaugurated a little more than two weeks ago:

His first call to any head of state as president was to Mahmoud Abbas, leader of Fatah party in the Palestinian territory.

His first one-on-one interview with any news organization was with Al Arabia television.

He ordered Guantanamo Bay closed and all military trials of detainees halted..

He ordered all overseas CIA interrogation centers closed.

He withdrew all charges against the masterminds behind the USS Cole and 9/11..

Now we learn that he is allowing hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refuges to move to and live in the US at American taxpayer expense.

642 - yikes! Thanks for the ping WCG. Fortunately, for the most part, it has been mild. A potential second wave in the fall worries me.

New Zealand customs agents find mystery arms cache from China
Wed, 05/06/2009

Wellington - New Zealand authorities are baffled by a mystery cache of machine guns, bullets, grenades and mortar bombs found in a shipping container from China in the South Island port of Dunedin, according to news reports on Wednesday.

Customs spokesman Rowan McArthur said the intended destination of the container, whose contents were discovered by a random X-ray, was not known. Army bomb-squad experts said the munitions were safe from accidental explosion.

Canadian man is first to plead guilty in "Toronto 18" plot to bomb nuclear plants
May 5, 2009

TORONTO — A Canadian man has pleaded guilty to his role in an alleged plan to bomb nuclear power plants and a building housing Canada's spy service.

Lawyer Russell Silverstein said Saad Khalid, 22, pleaded guilty Monday to a charge of intending to cause an explosion, but a judge banned publication of the plea until late Tuesday. Khalid is the first to plead guilty since the 2006 arrest of the "Toronto 18," a group prosecutors accuse of planning to truck-bomb nuclear power plants and the spy building. The case made headlines and heightened fears in a country where many people thought they were relatively immune from terrorist strikes.

IAEA finds particles of highly enriched uranium in Egypt
May 6, 2009

Vienna - The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has detected particles of highly enriched uranium at a nuclear research site in Egypt, according to a report made available to German Press Agency dpa on Wednesday.

The traces were found in 2007 and 2008 in samples taken at the Inshas research reactor, said the agency in its annual report on its nuclear inspection activities. Egypt has told the IAEA it believed the particles came to the country as contamination on containers of radioisotopes, a claim that is being investigated by the Vienna-based organization. The report did not state whether the uranium was enriched to such a high degree that it could be used for nuclear weapons.

Radioisotopes are used in medicine and industry, and can be produced in reactors powered by highly enriched uranium. In a separate investigation started in 2004, it was revealed that Egypt had failed to report various nuclear experiments to the IAEA.
