Mystery solved, suspect in custody! We finally know who pulled off a canine caper that generated news stories, and laughter, around the globe. The "shoplifting dog" has finally come forward and faced up to the crime.
Returning to the scene of the crime in a Hummer, Akira took it easy this time, riding instead of walking. The 11-year-old Siberian Husky seemed eager for a return visit to the Smith's grocery store.
Just before Christmas, surveillance video captured a mysterious dog making a clean getaway with a stolen rawhide bone. The Stirling family suspected Akira was the bad guy and brought her back to face the music.
"There's no question. That looks exactly like the dog," store manager Roger Adamson said. That same verdict was unanimous from store employees.

Thanks for the post. Great ending to a hilarious dog theft.
No, no, no! Bad girl! Bad, bad puppy! Get in your bed, and don’t let me see your face until you have thought about what you have done! Bad girl!
That is SO cute! Our Golden stole a dried pig’s ear at the feed store last week, but he was driven there in our car. That Akira would walk 12 miles is a hoot.
You know what I loved most about the surveillance tape?
No one seems to care (or notice) that the dog is even in the store walking strolling around with a bone in its mouth!
Thanks for that! I needed a laugh today.
Great story, great dog, except for the fact the owners of the dog seem to allow it to run off which there is no excuse for.
Awwwww. Nice story.
That’s too.
You have to be careful with Siberian Huskies.
They not only love to run but are great escape artists too.
It’s not because they hate who they’re living with. It’s just the simple fact that they’re thinking “Hey, I can get out of here for well...hmmm...BECAUSE I want to! I am a dog!”
Sorry for being skeptical, but a pet who is well fed or starving is not going to walk 12 miles to enter some store and steal food. Something stinks.
A dog that lives next door or very close, yes. But a dog that lives 12 miles away? No.
LOL!!!
I understand.
I used to own a hound dog. 12 miles in a day is NOT out of the bounds of what a dog would consider a reasonable jaunt.
Dogs also have a good sense of time. Dog probably knew when its humans were coming home, and always came home before them.
I had a neighbor who had that problem. People told him “Your dog is getting out” and he told them “it isn’t my dog” until finally we said “Yes, he yelps when the shock collar goes off, then runs around the neighborhood all day, then yelps when he gets back in his yard shortly before you get home”.
Yeah, that's why it's up to the human owners to see to it their area is secure, for the dogs protection.
Well he could be Secretary of the Treasury with those credentials!
Doggie ping!!
Wonder how the pooch discovered the grocery the first time around?
Probably by using Google Maps...
