Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) is calling for a truth commission to look into alleged abuses inside the Justice Department during former President George W. Bushs time in office, including a review of Office of Legal Counsel memos that authorized enhanced interrogation techniques against detainees, the warrantless surveillance program and other hugely controversial policies.
Leahy said such a panel would not seek to build criminal cases against Bush officials but to get to the bottom of what happened and why so we make sure it never happens again. Some Democrats have called for criminal investigations of former Bush DOJ officials, but President Obama and now Attorney General Eric Holder have resisted such calls.
Leahy, though, suggested that doing nothing is not an acceptable option, and then offered what he called A middle ground to find the truth.
People would be invited to come forward and share their knowledge and experiences, not for purposes of constructing criminal indictments, but to assemble the facts, Leahy said If needed, such a process could involve subpoena powers, and even the authority to obtain immunity from prosecutions in order to get to the whole truth.
Leahy did not offer any suggestions for who would oversee or make up the truth commission, calling instead for the appointment of a person or group of people universally recognized as fair minded, and without axes to grind.
With a Truth Commission, certainly there will be a need for a Ministry of Truth.
Senator Leahy, please allow me to respectfully quote former VP Dick Cheney.
Sorry, Leaky. You want a “Truth Commission” you need to bring a criminal investigation. You need to subpoena witnesses and have open testimony.
But you won’t do that will you, you lying schmuck.
No one to really stand up to these people, Americans died and sadly more will die because of these left wing idiots.
Worst words repeatedly spoken by George W Bush: “These are fine patriotic Americans, we just have a difference of opinion”.
Get real. Will someone send this guy to the looney bin already.
Which means, “we want to stage some show trials to punish the former regime in order to dissuade anyone from ever opposing us again.”
Leaky, you’re not even capable of TELLING the truth, much less finding it.
These loathesome people are criminally stupid.
Taxpayers’ “Hanging Commission” bump
To repeat, they have doled out the "bread", now begins the Circus.
“...Senator Leahy, please allow me to respectfully quote former VP Dick Cheney...”
I was very disappointed when VP Cheney said that. I would have preferred he punched that punk in the mouth.
Leahy is an irksome creature.
I say bring on the ‘Truth Commission’, Expand it to include all the carp the dems have been involved in.
OK; you pay for it, Pat.
Leahy’s a Monty Python fan.
Bet?
How about a non-partisan commission to investigate the causes of the mortgage industry meltdown.
The word “truth” should never be used in conjunction with a Democrat.
Not in the same sentence.
Not in the same paragraph.
Not on the same page.
Not in the same chapter.
Not in the same book.
But all that aside, President Bush had better start looking for a lawyer.
He is going to be put on trial, whether in the U.S. or at the Hague, I can’t say but he will be tried in one of the two places.
For those who think it will not happen, name one Counrty that the Communists have taken over that has not put their political enemies on trial.
obama is as much of a Communist as Stalin was.
