WASHINGTON (AP) - The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee is proposing a "truth commission" to investigate abuses of detainees, politically inspired moves at the Justice Department, and whole range of decisions made during the Bush administration. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., said the primary goal of the commission would be to learn the truth rather than prosecute former officials, but said the inquiry should reach far beyond misdeeds at the Justice Department under Bush to include matters of Iraq prewar intelligence and the Defense Department.
Leahy outlined his suggestion for a "truth and reconciliation" commission during a speech at Georgetown University Monday.
"I'm doing this not to humiliate people or punish people but to get the truth out," he said.
The panel he envisions would be modeled after one that investigated the apartheid regime in South Africa. It would have subpoena power but would not bring criminal charges, he said.
Among the matters Leahy wants investigated by such a commission are: the firings of U.S. attorneys, treatment and torture of terror suspect detainees, and the authorization of warrantless wiretapping.
"Rather than vengeance, we need a fair-minded pursuit of what actually happened" during the Bush administration, Leahy said.
Some Democrats have called for criminal investigations of those who authorized certain controversial tactics in the war on terror. Republicans have countered that such decisions made in the wake of the 2001 terror attacks should not be second-guessed.

I guess that means Sen. Milk Subsidies has paid his taxes. So uncommon for a Demonrat!
Mr. Leahy wouldn’t know the truth if if bit in his butt.
Besides, Mr. Bush is no longer in office, is he?
God forbid they would investigate all the illegal stuff they (themselves) do....please, someone get these people out of office. They are causing my blood pressure to rise leading to adverse health affects..
They need a bad guy. Without an enemy, the masses will begin to look at them and their policies. We know this so called stimulus package will not help, so they are figuring they better line up a distraction for the media and the other Obamabots.
What better enemy then the ex-President? He has been demonized for eight years by a liberal press and he no longer has the power to do anything to protect himself. This is classic Marxist redirection via a show trial. It is also disgusting and unAmerican.
when did liberals care about truth? isn’t it relative to them?
Guess Leakey is still stinging from that “F-off” remark from Cheney. *chuckle*
What was that, Mr.”Leaky” Leahy???
They have doled out the "bread", now begins the Circus.
Democrat dream :”Keep Bush Alive!”
Methinks the “I Won” Party are about to overplay their hand.
I mean, what’s next? Kill the male children of all Bush Administration members? Raze their hometowns and salt the ground?
Looks like the democrats want to completely rewrite history with republicans always as the liars and them as always the saviors? I just watched Boxer on CSPAN2 say that democrats under Clinton balanced the budget? What lies!
Clinton balanced the budget by taking the Social Security Trust Fund to balance the budget.
The “Third World” is now in power and they of course are concerned about the Third World class members being held in Gitmo. The Third World will care for its own something the former governing class apparently forgot.
This be nothing but a witch hunt that will give the Democrats a device to continually relate our current problems back to Bush and deflect examination of Obama’s failure, which they are apparently anticipating.

How about a panel to report abuses on TAXPAYERS by the Dems.!
Truth Committee?
Has a nice ring to it. Would be chaired by a Truth Commissar? Master of the Truth.
Or just Obama? You know, THEE Truth.
Gets creepier every day.
“Truth Committee?”
I meant Truth Commission.
