Specter to buck party, vote for stimulus ($6.5b pay to play?)

Concerned about the nation’s “very severe economic recession,” U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter said today he plans to vote for Senate Democrats’ economic stimulus package, despite the political risk.

“If we don’t act, we may find ourselves in a depression like 1929,” Mr. Specter said after visiting the Schott Glass Technologies plant in Duryea. “That has to be avoided.”

Mr. Specter, a Republican and part of a bipartisan group of senators who worked on the proposal, said the $827 billion Senate version is far less expensive than what Democratic Senate leaders originally proposed.

“It cuts the Democratic proposal by $110 billion, which is a lot of money,” he said, noting criticism of the Senate proposal by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. “So that’s a sign we must be on the right track.”

EXCERPT

“Well, of course I am,” Mr. Specter said when asked if he’s worried about the conservative backlash. “But (President) John Kennedy had it right. He said, ‘Sometimes the party asks too much.’ And this is something I think is necessary for the country. It goes beyond politics. It goes beyond the Democratic or Republican position. It’s the right thing for America.”

Mr. Specter said he would have supported the package even if Democrats had not added $6.5 billion in additional money for the National Institutes of Health to the final version of the bill.

Mr. Specter had sought the money for years, and had mentioned that he wanted the money in the bill when he met with President Barack Obama last week.

“That’s only one small part ... That’s not determinative in my mind,” he said.

The stimulus vote could create “a political problem,” he said, but “I thought the public interest was so important that I have to take whatever problems it brings me.”

What does he care if the USA becomes the USSA within the next generation? He’s old and won’t live to see the repercussions of his actions.

The problem with high-profile politicians like these is that they don’t really give a **** if we kick them out of office. First of all, incumbency rate is absurdly high. But even if they lose re-election— SO WHAT? They’re hired as lobbyists and influence peddlers and make tens of millions of dollars.

So what does Arlen Specter care if we kick him out if there’s $10 million waiting for him just to make a few phone calls a day?

“It goes beyond the Democratic or Republican position. It’s the right thing for ... ARLEN SPECTOR.”

This bill won’t help America, or Americans. What it will do is enrich a whole lot of Democrat politicians, and their friends. At my expense.

Spector is a sell out, it’s always been about him and what he can get for his vote.

Specter has always been easily bought off. AS I stated quite some time back, the RINOs would fall into line with the Dems (along with other borderline Repubs) as soon as enough pork was thrown their way - just like with the bank bailout last FALL>.. lots of big talk about blocking it, but then when the pork hit the right buttons - they all fell right in line.

Socialist are socialists.

Our founding fathers would be so ashamed of us - both because we have allowed our government to get to this point, and because we are doing nothing to stop the complete takeover by socialists. What is the point of the Bill of Rights? If we don’t exercise them, then we will lose them.

It never ceases to amaze me how politicians that never actually ran a business can be so authoritative, and wrong, at the same time.

Exactly!!!

Worse, people here scream that we have to kick out the RINOs from the GOP. Well guess what! The RINO's are demonstrating here that they have the most power to wheel-and-deal....not the GOP leadership.

We are so so so so screwed.

We are so so so so screwed.

Indeed we are. Even if Arlen Specter gets kicked out-- he'll get a million dollar lobbyist job, get a free limo, not pay his taxes, and then get nominated to Obama cabinet. So no sweat off his back.

Please take out your frustration by signing the petition to impeach Obama.

TY!! Great Post...

I said it days ago... the only RINO’s voting for this, are the ones that got a table setting at the table of pork...

the ones (RINO’s only) whining, are the ones that didn’t get their special seating at the table.......

Spector represents the worst of politics. We need to purge the party of these RINO’s. I’d rather have a solid conservative party than these POSes from Maine and Pennsylvania. This is what we get when we elect these types. If you are going to have a Democrat, then elect the real thing. Snow, Collins, Spector- A pox on your house.
