In all the years I have been on Free Republic, I have never taken a comment personally - until now. Sir, you’re outta line. I’m a retired B-767 Captain & Line Check Airman for a major airline, Instructor pilot, Vietnam veteran. Frankly, you don’t know what you’re talking about.
I flew large airplanes between 1970 and 2004 - DC-3, -6, -7, -8, Connies, B-707, -720, -727, -737, -757, and -767. I saw NO significant difference in the skill levels of airline pilots between all the Air Force, Army, civilian, Marine Corps and Navy pilots in my career. Period.
I don’t see it as any inter-service jab.
Just a case of pride in a particular service.
We see it every day here on FR.
I'll still take someone who has 2,000 hours of military aircraft experience, particularly including combat experience over a pilot with 2,000 hours in a Delta feeder.
Wow, what a resume! Thank you for your service, sir.
Which of those aircraft was your favorite to fly? I've heard that the Connie was beautiful (and it was), but not fun to fly.
With all due respect, sir, I didn't take his comment as a dismissal of the other branches of the military, I thought it was just a compliment to military training in general.
actually, I took the comment as any military-trained pilot would have done that, but Sully happened to be Air Force, right?
Hearing this transcript was most impressive of the level of professionalism all around. kudos to all!!
Question for you. What really struck me was the way the controller at Teterboro stepped in and said they could take the plane, and give him runway #1 immediately. There was litrerally no time...how was that possible?
Um, why did you feel the need to include me on that one?
That Constellation was one beautiful looking airplane.
As an aviation buff I can only think of a line from a favorite movie of mine..."there are several thousand questions I'd like to ask you"...
Did you have any favorites among those classics?
Oh, and absolutely, thank you for your service.
I can see how this might be read the way you interpreted it, and I can’t write for pfflier, I don’t even know Him/Her, but I don’t think there was any malice intended in this post towards the other service branches you cite by their omission. The comment of ‘Air Force Training’ applies to this situation in particular because Captain Sullenberger is a USAF veteran. I am not a pilot, but I have flown millions of miles as a passenger and it is widely known that most airline pilots are former military pilots from all branches of the armed services and the Coast Guard. All veterans deserve our respect regardless of how they served, BECAUSE they served. Have a great day...
I think sir you grossly over react. Or you just wanted to post your resume for all to admire.
