FAA releases cockpit audio for Flight 1549's Hudson landing

A one minute recording of some of the conversations between Capt. Sully and the controllers as he handled the loss of both engines. Also some conversation between the departure controller and the tower(s).

It came up originally because the discrepancy between what the news guys were saying and what was almost certainly actually happening was just another indication of how little trust you can put into early news reports.

It's not just the early reports! Two examples

1. During Desert Storm one of the networks had video of an F-16 taking off...in afterburner. The "aviation" expert said, "What we are looking at here is the rear thruster-booster on a fighter-bomber that is landing. LOL

2. Another aviation expert talking about JFK Jrs crash saying that you turn the aircraft with the rudder.

sounded more like “ATA, call ...” definitely not what you wrote.

I saw NO significant difference in the skill levels of airline pilots between all the Air Force, Army, civilian, Marine Corps and Navy pilots in my career. Period.

With all due respect, sir, I didn't take his comment as a dismissal of the other branches of the military, I thought it was just a compliment to military training in general.

actually, I took the comment as any military-trained pilot would have done that, but Sully happened to be Air Force, right?

Hearing this transcript was most impressive of the level of professionalism all around. kudos to all!!

Well, the military and civilian training is just a starter for the airline training programs, as is the glider training (I’m a glider instructor, too, and own a high-performance Schleicher ASW).

Air Force, Navy, Army, Marines, civilian. Whatever. If he made the cut, he’s good.

"Dead Lie Me" is easily one of the best TV series ever produced and faaaar better than Pushing daiseys"! A shame it lasted only 2 seasons. Loved the final line & scene of last episode - "It's not so bad...being dead like me."

A new direct-to-DVD movie is being released later this month that picks up 5 years later. One interesting aspect is George reveals herself to her living family. Alas, Laura Harris as "Daisy, Daisy Adair" was replaced by a new actress and "Rube" has moved on.

The 2 seasons on DVD is HIGHLY recommended as is the new DVD movie. I pre-ordered via Amazon.com here

And of the old US Air guys were none too happy about it.

a bit off topic, but one of my favorite flying stories was about an "old US Air Guy" and I think Sully would appreciate it. As I recall he reminded me of Sully, maybe a bit more weight, same amount of gray.

CLT to IAH back a week or so after Kennedy Jr. put his plane in the ocean. At CLT we received a gate hold for WX or something at Houston. US Air made us deplane for about an hour. Capt and First officer also deplaned for awhile and were in the waiting area close to the ticket agent and her desk. FO looked EXTREMELY young, and I think Capt.(the typical seasoned Sully look) sensed some of the pax quietly commenting about FO's age. As we reboarded, Capt came on intercom. As part of his briefing he mentioned, "and due to some current events (Kennedy), there has been talk about experience levels on flight decks, and I want to assure all of you back there, that there is 41 years of airline flight experience on this flight deck, and I've got 40 of em."

Question for you. What really struck me was the way the controller at Teterboro stepped in and said they could take the plane, and give him runway #1 immediately. There was litrerally no time...how was that possible?

Then I am sure you remember this one that didn’t end so well, I remember listening to the transmission shortly after the crash Http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM3TW, it was professional to the very end (though you could detect some stress in their voices). It was very haunting to listen to it, knowing the outcome .... guess you become so forcused on what you are doing that you block everything else out.

No, you wouldn't. I'm not knocking the combat pilot's experience, but he'll tell you that it's all about experience in type. Think of them like two surgeons. One is a neurosurgeon, the other a cardiac surgeon. Both of them do incredible things and both will save your life, but each is best in his specialty.
