FBI: Don’t be Fooled by Work-at-Home Scams

The FBI and the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) continue to receive numerous complaints from individuals who have fallen victim to work-at-home scams and remind consumers to be vigilant when seeking employment online.

These work-at-home schemes are designed by criminals to gain the trust of job seekers in order to take advantage of working relationships to further illegal activity. Most victims do not even realize they are engaging in criminal behavior until it is too late.

In many of the reported scams, victims are often hired to “process payments,” “transfer funds,” or “reship products.” However, these scams exploit unwitting employees by having them cash fraudulent checks, transfer illegally obtained funds for the criminals, or receive stolen merchandise and ship it to the criminals.

Other scams entice victims to sign up to be a “mystery shopper,” receiving fraudulent checks with instructions to cash the checks and wire the funds to “test” a company’s services. Victims are told they will be compensated with a portion of the merchandise or funds.

Job scams also often provide criminals the opportunity to commit identity theft when victims provide their personal information, sometimes even bank account information, to their potential “employer.” The criminal/employer can then use the victim’s information to open credit cards, post on-line auctions, register websites, etc., in the victim’s name to commit additional crimes.

“Don’t get duped by these criminals offering easy money. Remain skeptical of unsolicited job offers that sound too good to be true and report any scams you might encounter,” said Richard Kolko, FBI National Press Office.

To receive the latest information about cyber scams, please go to the FBI website and sign up for e-mail alerts by clicking on one of the red envelopes. If you have received a scam e-mail, please notify the IC3 by filing a complaint at www.ic3.gov. For more information on e-scams, please visit the FBI’s New E-Scams and Warnings webpage at www.fbi.gov or www.lookstoogoodtobetrue.com. # # #

Michelle Soetero works at home, but it doesn’t pay much!

I heard that comment. I'll bet she's really tired of having all those servants cooking and cleaning for her. The limo rides must be exhausting...especially when you're running away from that crummy dwelling so you can read books to children at Sidwell Friends school. Poor Barry just couldn't wait to escape from his responsibilities. I wonder if Stephanopoulos will be around to help Barry avoid making that gaffe about his Muslim faith next December. It might not be an issue if he's tanning in Hawaii again.

You’re gonna have to stop transferring those funds to Nigeria for that new boss of yours.

Now that’s a good job.

I like it. I've been creating code using XBee 802.15.4 radios this week to perform remote RF wake up of the rail cars. It's just Windows to Windows right now to get all the API libraries functioning. The Windows half will be finished at that point. I still have to port the code to the PIC18F6680 to run in the Smart Charger controller. The PIC C compiler is clueless when it comes to double precision IEEE-754 floats (the 8 byte variety). That's an annoying, but solvable problem...in PIC assembler.

I’m not, but it’s pretty funny how dumb some Americans are. I don’t think the Obuma voters got the note on the con job before Nov 4.

All you have to do is follow this simple 5-Step Piece-of-Cake Process…

1. Choose the companies you would like to work with. There are currently more than 12000 companies to choose from. You will never run out of jobs anymore!

2. Login to your ad account.

3. Enter your ads into the forms.

4. Hit the submit button.

5. That's it! Sit back and wait for your checks to come in.

I could drag you further off the reservation. What's the principal value of a Remez exchange design for a low pass FIR filter? What's the nominal crossover point (in taps) for using a convolution in time vs a multiplication in frequency assuming a general purpose x86 CPU.

Some of my work isn't entirely embedded...yet.

on the upside make the best dinners short of eating out at an upscale restaurant.

Gramps and the dogs and I will be there for dinner tomorrow. What time is it served? Shall I bring a ..... jello salad? :)

Oh, sorry...you missed dinner, Brad’s gramma.

Halibut steaks broiled in Orange juice w/red pepper spices, Medditeranean veggie mix, mixed berries, and apple pie for dessert.

It was good.
