McCain tries to 'kill' US-only stimulus clause

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Republican Senator John McCain on Wednesday introduced legislation to strip from a massive economic stimulus bill a "Buy American" clause that has deeply angered and worried US allies.

"I've got an amendment to try to kill it," McCain, who lost the White House to President Barack Obama in November, told AFP shortly after introducing the measure.

A Senate vote on the amendment, which declares that "the utilization of funds appropriated or otherwise made available by this Act shall not be subject to any Buy American requirement," could come late Wednesday or early Thursday.

The EU and Canada have fiercely attacked the "Buy American" clause, warning it could start a global round of tit-for-tat trade reprisals akin to the tariff wars blamed for deepening the Great Depression of the 1930s.

You, FDR and other economically ignorant Americans like it. We’ve got the history behind trade wars and they are not pretty. The Puritans so hated the British laws against free trade that, good Christians they were, they happily endorsed and participated in smuggling.

Repeat slowly until understood fully: “Trade is good.” Once you can say that without choking you can move to level 2:

“Trade makes a country and its people rich.”

That would actually benefit the entire country and not just his donor list. Keating 5 was small time.

That “buy American” thingie makes money laundering so much tougher.
How *ever* will they be able to raise money for their next campaign?

He is probably green as a cabbage and vomiting in some Capitol Hill toilet just thinking about this conservative move.

Don't worry. The excitement wore off after 2.7 seconds.

In the long run, taxes must be cut dramatically, government spending must be curtailed, and government regulations must be simplified...in order to make the United States economically competitive without having to resort to protectionist insanity.

Sure, why not? Lets borrow a $1+T so we can send the $$ overseas and employ illegal aliens. That the ticket, right Juan? After all, Juan will probably be dead or senile when the bill finally comes due.

Good. As moronically stupid as the bill is, the Buy American clause is insane.

Sure-how could we not pass American taxpayer money to the Chinese and Europe and help stimulate their economies...how silly of us...their unemployment is much more important than the fact that Americans are losing their jobs in huge numbers...why don’t we have some more insourcing while we are at it. I forgot the American government’s duty is to protect the jobs of every living creature...except of course Americans.

The blind can successfully shoot a target from time to time. But yeah, that clause is most definitely union pandering garbage. I do question his motives tho.

and when the European governments save their airlines and say “under no circumstances will you use this money to buy Boeing planes”, how will you feel. Beggar thy neighbor strategies are the quickest paths to the poorhouse.

We are not trying to beggar our neighbor...we are trying to stimulate jobs in this country. It applies only to stimulus spending...and makes sense.
