WASHINGTON (AFP) Republican Senator John McCain on Wednesday introduced legislation to strip from a massive economic stimulus bill a "Buy American" clause that has deeply angered and worried US allies.
"I've got an amendment to try to kill it," McCain, who lost the White House to President Barack Obama in November, told AFP shortly after introducing the measure.
A Senate vote on the amendment, which declares that "the utilization of funds appropriated or otherwise made available by this Act shall not be subject to any Buy American requirement," could come late Wednesday or early Thursday.
The EU and Canada have fiercely attacked the "Buy American" clause, warning it could start a global round of tit-for-tat trade reprisals akin to the tariff wars blamed for deepening the Great Depression of the 1930s.

OMG. McQueeg finally found his strawberries. I can't believe I'm saying that I might actually agree with him on this one.

Yawn. The “buy American” clause is probably the least offensive thing about this bill.

He is trying to kill the only part I agree with.

Look for the ‘McCain-Lieberman’ super duper, omnibus spending package around the corner. McCain can’t remain a conservative more then five minutes.

NO! HELL NO!
Folks, the only thing that should be done right now, is to implement a massive tax cut to corporations and private individuals. Hell, make it retroactive. Fork over more money in the form of returns for last years tax obligations.
Then stand back and watch business thrive and people be put back to work.
These bailouts are rotten to the core. So glee about tweaking them is a self-betrayal of sorts.
Just stick a stake through the heart of these bailouts, and bury them.

Actually, he’s doing Obama a big favor. Obama was already backing down on this, and now he can blame it on McCain, or claim that he is making a bipartisan gesture.

If this goes through it will only protect union jobs. Looks like McCain didn't get much union money. What am I thinking?? McCain ran on the Republican ticket. Of course he didn't get any union money.
To: rabscuttle385
That would be a good plan. 0bama won’t use it because he wouldn’t get the credit.
To: rabscuttle385
I don’t care whose plan it is. It’s the only plan that deserves our praise, or a smile at a tweak or two, as long as they are reasoned.
As for the term bailout, I am repulsed by it.
