The Gregg bombshell
SFGate: Politics Blog ^ | 2/4/9 | Carolyn Lochhead

Posted on 02/04/2009 9:29:51 AM PST by SmithL

The significance of Obama's naming Gregg at Commerce was lost amid the Daschle disaster yesterday. No one in Washington has been more persistent or more passionate about reining in entitlement programs, which the GAO tallies at $53 trillion in unfunded liabilities.

Today Gregg said Obama "specifically asked me to come down to address this."

The Commerce post is traditionally a shill for business interests and a plum handed out to a president's closest political ally or fundraiser. That's what the originial pick, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson would have been.

Naming Gregg means Obama has in mind something entirely different. Gregg, a two-term New Hampshire governor and former House member with 16 years in the Senate, is as conservative as they come, but not of the religious variety. He is more of a New England style libertarian. He told me a few weeks ago he is tired of partisan warfare and wants to govern.

For years and years he has been the leading voice on Capitol Hill for addressing the long-term budget problems of Medicare and Social Security, wielding charts and talking into the political wind on an unpleasant topic. He said again today, "We've got to address the long-term tsunami." That's what he was put there to do.

Obama has said he'd rather be a one-term president who gets something done than a two-term caretaker. Everyone knows Medicare spending is unsustainable, including Obama. . . .

She’s talking about Senator Gregg, right?

Doesn’t sound like him.

Considering that he won the Presidency, I’d rather Obama be a one term President too. I’d have prefered that the people of this country had exersized better sense and not elected the schmuck in the first place. Now those who voted this schmuck into office are getting their first tastes of what his administration will be like. It’s not looking very good so far.

Yes, they're mostly reserving their long knives for "the religious variety"

“Naming Gregg means Obama has in mind something entirely different.”

Yep, a new moderate R in the Senate that will vote with the Dems on social policies for two years, and then they'll get the new D Senator in after that. He couldn't have asked for much more.

I love it.

Gregg is hated by the Libs, because they are blinded by the (R) next to his names, thus damaging Zero’s shine.

While at the same time conservatives are gleeful because we just got rid of a another RINO without even having to defeat him in an election (he’s popular so it would have been tough)

If all goes well. A conservative will pick up that seat in 2010 (probably Sununu). Gregg will continue to annoy the Lib base and further deteriorate Obama’s image. And just like a broken clock, even RINO are right occasionally - maybe he’ll just shut down the whole Commerce department.

So, essentially, he has no foundational principles upon which he rests. That explains why he is such a wishy-washy RINO dishrag.

So the original Richardson appointment meant .... what?

"I’d have preferred that the people of this country had exercised better sense"

Those people will be here after Zero's first and second term. They aren't going anywhere voluntarily and the right won't get rid of them, preferences notwithstanding.

Yup, get him out of the senate so that the general election will have two n00bs running against each other rather than a liberal vs a moderate in 2010, to increase the odds of the liberal winning (no incumbent).

Gregg is expendable and will get caught in an “ethics violation” and will be asked to step down now that he has agreed to this deal.

His replacement has, I heard, agreed no to run in 2010.

What is she thinking — or am I missing something? What does the Dept of Commerce have to do with Social Security and Medicare? I would have thought it had more to do with, well, commerce . . .

“or am I missing something? What does the Dept of Commerce have to do with Social Security and Medicare? I would have thought it had more to do with, well, commerce . . “

Unfortunatley, it has to do with trade deals, which includes little things like ‘Social security totalization’...the plan to give illegal aliens from Mexico social security which Bush instituted.

Everyone knows Medicare spending is unsustainable, including Obama. He knows that federal budget problems could wreck his presidency.

Zero doesn't care if Medicare costs 100% of the budget. The zero is counting on the press to prop him up and to hide his ineptitude and stupidity.

" With Daschle gone and no back-up plan, health care guru Robert Laszewski floated the idea today of Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Oregon"

Obama, Biden, Clinton, Gregg...

Will there be no one left in the Senate?

IMO, he is an incoherent , inexperienced, socialist, empty suit.
