Just as Tom Daschle's Senate pals were preparing to grant absolution for his six-figure tax-free limousine -- could've happened to anyone -- the former Majority Leader yesterday withdrew his nomination to be Secretary of Health and Human Services. Give Mr. Daschle credit for making the honorable choice, and sparing President Obama from a bipartisan populist revolt.
Ron Paul once said that you can’t keep an uncovered cake under the sink and expect that it won’t attract cockroaches.

There is no way he could survive his video of denouncing tax cheats.
Republicans could have run this endlessly to hammer all of the tax cheats in the cabinet.
That’s why expecting “change” is nuts. These guys and gals become very wealthy doing what they do. They’re capitalists with a gun to your head.
Where’s the link??
DUH. So sorry, and thank you!
DUH. So sorry, and thank you!
I would give Mr. Dashle credit if he had immediately withdrawn his name when this all surfaced. Instead he wanted to see who our new Treasury Secretary fared, and once he saw that a little $34,000 tax indifference was passed over, he just had to see if his $124,000 oversight would make it. He's not sorry for making a tax error, he's sorry that he got caught.
Senator Ensign said yesterday that he was going to face some very tough lobbying questions as well.
honoroble? no way! He probably has so much more that could be exposed. His wife may have lost her half million a year lobbying positions also.
His wife probably put the brakes on this whole fiasco. Way too much dirty laundry hanging out on their combined lines for any more digging to take place.
The "Let's quit while we're ahead and say we're sooooo sorry" defense ranks right up there with "I just want to spend more time with my family."
Daschle is not honorable
He is greedy and pragmatic
His bad PR was going to cut into his wife’s lobbyist income and his future lobbying income
He got rich by using his position for personal advantage
and so did his trophy wife
She got rich by lobbying lawmakers and helping airlines pad their bottom line by avoiding making security upgrades-

Once a poof...always a poof. Obviously, his tax problem was only the tip of the ice berg. Good riddance!!
Would have been a lot more honorable if it had been made at the first word of his ‘oversight’.
I propose that Congress pass a new law. That every member of Congress should have to undergo an IRS audit every year and that all nominees for Cabinet positions, ambassadorships, US attorneys, etc. must also be audited before they can be confirmed.

This story illustrates the problem with the attractiveness of Washington, DC. Once a politico is sent there, they never come home.
I'll second the motion for that new law.
And their hands in our pockets. Ouch.
