How green can California's cars go? 4 February 2009
Californians love their cars and many of them are fuel hungry
US President Barack Obama gave California's environmentalists cause to celebrate when he took a step closer to backing the state's plans for strict vehicle emissions standards.
The BBC's Rajesh Mirchandani looks at whether the technology required is feasible and if drivers would pay for it.
Driving is a way of life in California: the state has more cars than any other.
But the authorities think they are a major contributory factor to global warming and should be targeted in attempts to reduce greenhouse gases.
California wants to cut emissions by 30% within eight years.
Part of its plan includes tough new fuel efficiency goals - new cars would have to average 42 miles per gallon (mpg), more than twice what most vehicles on America's roads manage.

Somebody needs to gag Arnold with a green grease rag!!!
nawwwwwwww.....
Arnold is proof that California will rot your brain

How green indeed!
14 MPG I think.
A Challenger for me, but not for thee.
Yabba Dabba Do!
With the way CAL is going....the Flintstone will be the only car allowed in the state
*snort* That was EXACTLY my first thought, when I read that headline!
You know what they say: life imitates art.
With islamofacists pushing for everyone to accept their religion, liberal politicians and their media minions promoting political correctness, enviro-whackos causing a non-existent global weather crisis, corrupt financial bankers ruining our market system (led by those politicians already mentioned), it seems only a matter of time that people retreat from forward thinking advancement and move backwards towards the Flinstones lifestyle.
Sad, isn’t it?
Sounds like a fantastic idea. I think they should make it retroactive and not let any car that gets less than 80mpg across the border. Including semi trucks.
I would then open a string of car storage lots along the Cali. Nevada border.
I’m rooting for you Cali, let me know what I can do.
I would assume the aim is to not make cars more fuel efficient, but make a case to tax those that don’t meet the requirements more than those that do. Sort of a progressive registration fee.
My, my, those Europeans do love the "authorities".
Servile scum. No wonder they are being eradicated by Islam.
