FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 09-17

Governor Palin Reduces Current Year Spending $268.6 million in budget reductions

February 3, 2009, Juneau, Alaska – Governor Sarah Palin submitted a supplemental budget to legislators today that reduces general funds by $268.6 million and seeks authorization to access savings to balance the budget at the end of the fiscal year.

“With changing market conditions and declining oil prices, our state agencies have been working hard to find savings and still provide needed public services,” Governor Palin said. “Through savings targets we implemented at the beginning of the fiscal year and by efficiently managing our programs, we have been able to reduce the current budget and minimize supplemental funding. The more we reduce now, the less we will have to draw from savings at the end of the year.”

The $268.6 million in reductions will bring the estimated revenue shortfall to $1.36 billion. Legislators will have to authorize the use of reserves or make additional reductions to balance the FY2009 budget.

“FY2009 has been a year of unprecedented revenue volatility,” said Palin. “Due to the dramatic decline in oil prices, the estimated revenue of $7.5 billion in the spring 2008 forecast was lowered to $5.5 billion in the January 2009 interim forecast, making responsible reductions necessary.”

The FY2009 budget authorized expenditures of $5.99 billion plus savings appropriations of $1.18 billion, for a total of $7.17 billion.

“With the drop in oil prices, it will require reductions in the budget and access to reserves to keep Alaskans employed and the economy moving,” Palin added. “I am committed to working with the legislature, as we have over the past two years, to make prudent budget decisions and continue to invest in infrastructure that will help develop our resources and our communities. We will continue to monitor the changing economic conditions and the impact of oil prices in the coming weeks as we work on this, and other appropriation bills this legislative session.”

The supplemental bill and more detailed information on the budget are available on the Office of Management & Budget website at http://omb.alaska.gov/ ###

I don’t want to hear any more whining and carping about her not being a fiscal conservative. This some serious budget cutting.

Exactly, she cuts spending more and more everyday, gee does this sound like a woman who is for the stimulus package..I THINK NOT. Told ya all, she is the real deal. Some of you may not agree with some of what she believes in but she is a damn good Governor and an amazing human being. I promised myself already that this year, I am flying to Alaska, I just gotta see this wonderful state. I wish Sarah were our Governor, we are stuck in hell here in Cali with Arnold

I don't see why she doesn't say drill baby drill every chance she gets and follow that up with do you know how much revenues that would bring in to states and the feds through royalties?

I wonder if she would consider running in California, if we would agree to give Alaska 3% of the savings.

I think we should just call our President brain damaged and hold new elections. The lies just aren’t going to float this piece of crap President.

Who would have ever thought hiring a street walker for President was a good idea.

Where I live in Alaska gas is $5.59 and heating oil is $6/gal. So much for the dramatic drop in oil prices!

Don’t pack your bags just yet!

Unfortunately she wouldn’t stand a chance winning here. Too damn liberal here. I still see Obama/Biden 08 stickers on cars and on houses. Conservative Orange County, Ventura County, and San Diego County yes, but liberal los angeles county, forget about it. People here want free free free, they don’t care about fiscal responsibility

I had heard things were more expensive in Alaska, since everything (almost) has to be shipped in.

What accounts for the much higher price for gasoline and heating oil? Is it too few refineries? Taxes? Costs of extraction higher in Alaska?

Just curious...

If we could pass Proposition 8 with a comfortable margin, we could elect her here. She is articulate and very popular.

I don’t even think the Republican Party leadership could undermine her with near the effect of their antics with Simon.

When I put patriotic things on YouTube, California is my biggest subscriber. No other state even comes close.

Her wave was the very first thing that endeared her to me on 8/29/08 when she was introduced.

Then she had me at hello. The rest of the speech was just wonderful.

President No. 45. Can’t wait.
