WASHINGTON (CNN) Ten Republican senators met in Sen. Mel Martinez's office Tuesday morning to discuss a broader stimulus measure than their leadership is proposing but a narrower one than Democrats are considering.
CNN was the only news organization outside the meeting.
Afterwards, Martinez told CNN the details are still being debated and finalized, but they are looking at a ballpark figure of $500 billion, including the cost of tax cuts, infrastructure and military spending, and provisions to address the housing crisis.
Martinez and Sen. Lindsey Graham said they plan to present their ideas to fellow Republicans at their weekly policy lunch today.
. . . . .
The group of senators included John McCain, Mel Martinez, Saxby Chambliss, Susan Collins, Richard Burr, George Voinovich, Tom Coburn, John Thune, Johnny Isakson, and Lindsey Graham.

Post of the day!
Add these to stimulus package :
Build 35+ new nuclear power plants
Build 15+ coal to diesel/gasoline plants
Drill in ANWR
Eliminate all but two blends of gasoline in the entire country.
Feel free to add to this list....
Oh goody. Another McCain gang. The Republican arm of the democrat party.
Unelect each and every one of them as soon as possible!
Add the list
Steep penalty for any politican busted on ethics (could be a new revenue stream).
Maybe Coburn and Thune can steer it back toward DeMint’s plan?
Oh, sure I can.
Coburn is a RINO, too.
And, so is Ted Nugent.
And, so is everyone else.
WOW - A CONSERVATIVE PLAN FOR ECONOMIC GROWTH.
Who’d a thunk.
I will be calling everyone to urge support for Sen Jim DeMint’s alternative proposal.
The DeMint Jobs Plan
The American Option
Nearly 18 Million New Jobs in 10 years
How it works:
1) Defuse the 2011 tax bomb: Stop tax increases set to hit the economy in 2011.
o Permanently repeal the alternative minimum tax once and for all;
o Permanently keep the capital gains and dividends taxes at 15 percent;
o Permanently kill the Death Tax for estates under $5 million, and cut the tax rate to 15 percent for those above;
o Permanently extend the $1,000-per-child tax credit;
o Permanently repeal the marriage tax penalty;
o Permanently simplify itemized deductions to include only home mortgage interest and charitable contributions.
2) Long term, broad based tax cuts for American families and businesses.
o Lower top marginal income rates the one paid by most of the small businesses that create new jobs from 35 percent to 25 percent.
o Simplify the tax code to include only two other brackets, 15 and 10 percent.
o Lower corporate tax rate as well, from 35 percent to 25 percent. The U.S. corporate tax rate is second highest among all industrialized nations, driving investment and jobs overseas. Lowering this key rate will unlock trillions of dollars to be invested in America instead of abroad.
o This is not only good economic policy, but a matter of fairness. No American family should be forced to pay the federal government more than 25 percent of the fruits of their hard labor.
The estimated effect on the American economy:
JOBS
Nearly 500,000 new jobs created in 2009, and 1.3 million more in 2010
A total of 7.5 million by 2013, in just 5 years.
Nearly 18 million jobs created over the next 10 years.
HOUSING
Residential housing investment would increase by $96 billion over 3 years, and $175 billion over 5 years. Commercial real estate activity would increase $120 billion over 3 years, and $362 billion over 5 years.
$537 billion in new real estate and construction activity over 5 years.
Lower interest rates reducing taxes on capital increases the supply of money invested and lent, reducing the cost of borrowing.
AUTO INDUSTRY
Between 2009 and 2011, total sales of new automobiles and light trucks would be $24.5 billion higher than they would otherwise be.
Yes, we need to get the conservative input into this.
The DeMint plan should be the Republican Alternative bill.
We do NOT need any other!
Ideally, we need to have 41 votes for a conservative alternative and willingness to filibuster the current bill would mean SUCCESS in forcing a rewrite. it’s sad we are down to only 41 GOP Senators. Even 45 Senators and we could hold the line against this garbage. Not sure what can be done with half a dozen RINO wimps in the caucus. They are the same RINOs who killed making the Bush tax cuts in 2005 and thereby put us into this mess!
And here's the perfect graphic for this bunch...
Lindsey Ping
"Republican by day, Democrat by night."
It’s time for us in GA to light up the phones for Chambliss and Isakson.
Isakson is up in 2 years. He is being watched veeerrrry closely to determine if he’s worthy of another term. His base is dying off fast and the seat is ripe for new blood.
This could still get interesting with this bunch.
If the Republicans write a bill for $500B, it will be a STUNNING defeat for the Dems (given their stranglehold on government), even though we still lose.
...let’s watch and enjoy.
Cedric, it might be a good thing if you started taking your meds again.
It’s a liberal’s job to make mistakes... it’s a McLame “Conservative’s” job to ensure that the mistakes are not corrected.
How do you figure a McLame bill which would destroy DeMint’s bill, would be a defeat for the RATS???
Nothing great (or even good) about the RINO bill...but it will show that the Dems can be slowed, even with our disastrous headcount in Congress.
That’s all - but it’s a lot when compared to where people thought we were just a few weeks ago.
It’ll show the Dems WHAT about the RINOs who propose it? That they can undermine and divert attention from a REAL stimulus bill, such as Jim DeMint’s??? That’s about ALL it’s good for.
And if ALL the Pubbies were to get behind DeMint’s bill, wouldn’t that send a REAL message, that smaller taxes are the real stimulus for a robust economy, thus destroying the Obama Message? Which is hardly what McLame and Co. want to do, of course. So, NO, this is a sham and a disgrace (what else did you expect) on the part of its sponsors in the Senate RINO Pubbie caucus.
Agree.
