It was reported that Gregg had said that he would not take the position unless the governor agreed to appoint another “R”

How is this different from Blago aside from the form of the pro quo?

J. Bonnie Newman, 63, was Sen. Judd Gregg’s chief of staff when he was in the U.S. House in the 1980s. She has a long resume in the private and public sectors, highlighted by her roles as assistant to the President for management and administration in the George H.W. Bush White House, an assistant commerce secretary in the Reagan administration, interim president of the University of New Hampshire and executive dean at the Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.

I agree. I thought the man would be able to see what Obama’s real goal was with his appointment. Its troubling to see Gregg more interested in his own self advancement than in the best interests in his country.

“How is this different from Blago aside from the form of the pro quo?”

HUGE difference...Blago was “shopping” the appointment for $$$$$$$$$ and/or a position...definitely illegal!

I no longer expect any politician to put the good of the country ahead of their personal power, perks and privelges. None of them.

Someone on FR yesterday said part of the deal is that the replacement senator would not run in the next election. Does anyone know if that is true?

No idea.

If so, maybe Senator Sununu should try a comeback...

“....Newman served as assistant secretary of Commerce for economic development in the Reagan administration.”

So she'd be a better pick for Commerce than Gregg! That says a lot.

I am so disappointed that he'd fall for this. Must have been a heck of an offer.

There were rumors that the deal with the replacement was that she won't run for re-election after her two years. Anybody read that too? How would that work, anyway, as a contract?
