What Does Leon Panetta Know About TWA 800?

"Best evidence is that MSNBC, which had gone on the air just two days prior to the TWA 800 disaster, won a bidding war for the amateur video.

According to an MSNBC editor, who refuses to talk on the record, "three men in suits" came to the station’s editing suites the night of the crash, removed the tape, and threatened the editors with serious consequences if they ever revealed its contents.

At Leon Panetta’s confirmation hearing, some bold senator just might want to ask the presumptive CIA chief what happened to the videotape. As Bill Clinton’s chief of staff at the time, Panetta was in a position to know."

Everyone (OK, a lotta people) know what’s on that videotape. It shows a missile trail (or something very like one) going from sea level up to the TWA Flight 800 and a subsequent explosion. Oh yeah, there were also 42 creditable witnesses.

Not a one. Why weren't all those aircraft grounded and inspected??? Now, here's the other question -- what did Panetta know and when did he know it? And what was his role in the cover up? And how does that connect with Sandy Berger and the National Archive heist?

We're never going to know exactly what happened. Like the Vince Foster cover-up, all we know is that it didn't happen the way the government says it happened.

Maybe someday we can meet this Panetta weirdo and buy him a few drinks and find out what went on that night in the White House..

I get sick everytime I think of Flight 800. I have no doubt it was taken out by a missile. Who's missile, I haven't a clue. Could have been terrorists as well, but billy didn't want to get into any stinkin war. It would have ruined his good time at the WH.

Yeah and I distinctly remember the FAA air traffic controllers' radar that was on the tube that even identified the missile and put an icon it as to what it most likely was, direction, speed, mass, etc.

Try to find those stills today on the Internet.

Did any specific group claim responsibility for the incident? They usually can’t wait to brag about their successes of this sort.

Plenty of controversy there. I was working away from home and was on the road during the early coverage of that event, so only heard ABC radio coverage. One bit I remember was a paraphrased statement from a military man who viewed the explosion from aboard another jetliner flying above TWA 800. The report was it looked like a SAM to him, and he knew what a SAM looked like. That was on the radio one time and never repeated.

I think the missile conspiracy theory is every bit as plausible as the exploding fuel tank explanation though not much more so. And I give a tiny bit more weight to friendly fire over terrorism, only because I don't see what personal benefit the time's occupant of the White House would derive from covering up an act of terrorism (but the thing at the Olympics raises the question too I must admit).

But being objective as I can be as one firmly in the camp of those with little regard for Bill Clinton, I don't hold any one of those three possibilities a lot more likely than the others. It may well have been none of the above.

At this stage of the game I don't know what societal benefit there would be in knowing the Real True Facts, but to satisfy my own curiosity I'd really like to know.

Until then I remain clinging to the fence.
