Michael Steele, the new chairman of the Republican National Committee wants the GOP to reach out to candidates who support gay marriage and are pro-choice. Steele told Fox's Chris Wallace that it was "important" to reach out to those voters.
WALLACE: You are one of the co-founders of something called the Republican Leadership Council which supports candidates who favor abortion and gay rights.
STEELE: Yes.
(watch video)
WALLACE: Does the GOP needs to do a better job of reaching out to people who hold those views?
STEELE: I think -- I think that's an important opportunity for us, absolutely. Within our party we do have those who have that view as well as outside and my partnership with Christy Todd Whittman was an effort to build a bridge between moderates and conservatives.

I can’t say that I’ve ever received a more gratifying reply on FreeRepublic.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I like the AIP & am joining them. Republican Party is worthless.
You are more than welcome!
First let me say, I don’t agree with any Republican, including Steele, with the “big tent” theory.
But I know Michael Steele has a good heart, because when he is on the radio talk shows, he brings up the life issue himself. He is SINCERELY prolife.
And this Video Cafe, and other liberal groups have an agenda to get Republicans angry at Republicans, and some Republicans are playing right into their hands. Some Republicans even stay home on Election Day, and the result is that left is taking over in the WH and in Congress.
I saw the interview myself, and Steele mostly said stuff that I agree with, but of course, Video Cafe didn’t mention that.
Here’s a snip of what I mean, and a link to the transcript of the interview, if anyone is interested:
“..I’m a pro-life Roman Catholic conservative, always have been.
WALLACE: You also support a constitutional amendment against gay marriage.

BTW, there are NO MODERATE VOTERS of any kind. Our electorate is organized as a three dimensional bi-modal saddle. It simply has no middle.
You do not have to appeal to their pudenda to get their attention. Once they're out of the gay bars, airport toilets and bathhouses they have their minds on the most precious thing in their lives ~ THEIR MONEY.
It is possible for the party of business to attract their votes.
Remember that some pro-lifers helped to elect the current president, and 58% of Americans DO NOT approve of his rescinding of the so-called “Mexico City” policy. Rabid NARAL-loving extremists are a small minority, yet their view is representative of the Dem party. Why can’t we play to that strength?
“you can’t win an election without pulling in voters from the other side”
yeah, worked great for mccain didn’t it
republicans win landslides when they’re CONSERVATIVE
The point is you can get 100% of the Conservatives out to vote and if that's all the people you can get you will lose every single time.
It is necessary to LEAD Democrat voters to pull Republican levers.
Remember, all Democrats are not focused exclusively on their pudenda or killing their kids. You do not attract the rank and file with promises made to homosexuals or abortionists. If anything that encourages Democrats to just keep on voting Democrat "'cause, what's the difference".
I do hope you understand what I'm saying here.
I know it's difficult to believe that some normal people might well vote Democrat but they do. They must be LEAD away from their usual habits.
Crazy, and for those who believe in the Right to Life, suicidal.
And they then move the Republican Party to the left on abortion.
And still more babies die.
Worth it to you?
What do you want common ground on? War and supply side economics? Both are extremely unpopular election losers.
Well said.
