WASHINGTON Senate Democrats rushed on Saturday to save the nomination of their former leader, Tom Daschle, as President Obamas health and human services secretary, while the White House sought to explain how Mr. Daschle survived its vaunted vetting process despite his failure to pay $128,000 in taxes.
Senior administration officials said that although Mr. Daschle was aware as early as June 2008 that he might have to pay back taxes for the use of a car and driver provided by a private equity firm, he did not inform the presidents transition team until mid-December, several days after Mr. Obama announced Mr. Daschle as his pick for health secretary. Mr. Obama is standing by him, the White House said.
The president believes that nobody is perfect, but that nobody is trying to hide anything, Robert Gibbs, the presidents press secretary, said in an interview, adding, I think Senator Daschle rightly is going to have to answer questions, but I think members will be satisfied with the answers that he gives and will understand that hes the right man for the job.
But Mr. Daschles confirmation is far from assured. On Monday, the Senate Finance Committee, which is charged with holding a confirmation hearing on Mr. Daschles nomination, will meet behind closed doors to discuss his taxes. After Timothy F. Geithner, Mr. Obamas Treasury secretary, faced similar issues, some senators may have little appetite for confirming another nominee with tax problems.

If those bozos confirm another tax cheat, that’s it. I’m not paying my taxes. Of course, I’m not a dem nor an Obambi-kiss-up, so I won’t get away with it.
I am sure the Puff Daschle meant well. Isn’t that all democrat party hacks have to do is to simply mean well? If you or I don’t pay, they will haul us away. Two of Bama’s big boys are big tax cheats, plain and simple. They expect sacrifice, what should we expect of them?
If there’s one I’d love to see shot down, it’s Little Tommie. I just don’t like him.

Bookmarking so I can return to this thread and LOL...then cry of Daschle's appointment.
If ENOUGH of us didn’t pay taxes....they might get the message....but it would take a BIG percentage of us to do that...
There are several people who are advocating deliberately making some minor mistakes to the IRS in protest this year, and hoping the protest will bury them in paper work.
The president believes that nobody is perfect, but that nobody is trying to hide anything,
Within a stones throw of my house, I would bet I could find 10 people who have paid every penny of their taxes for the last 10 years.
Mr President, If you are not finding anybody who has a clean tax record, come see me. I can recommend lots.
....Bob
But he’s an “honest” tax cheat. He was just “sloppy”. “Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy.” All DemocRATS are “sloppy.” Especially when they allow themselves to get caught.
I couls see them suddenly deciding on a national sales tax if people stopped paying their taxes.
The whole black market thing is sounding better all the time
wasn’t this guy on the tax writting commision for a few years or so
seems either tax evasion or stupidity
being a lib it could be either
This sure is the kind of CHANGE I was expecting...
He just looks evil. ugh
It will be interesting how the democrat, in the tank media, spin this one. If this were a republican, they would be all over it. Lets see how they cover Daschle on the Sunday shows. Shameless!
The president believes that nobody is perfect, but that nobody is trying to hide anything,
Gobbledygook. Utter blather.
That’s pretty good!
Dashole must be deeply saddened.
