Newly elected chairman of the Republican National Committee Michael Steele said he is focused on three races in his effort to rebuild the GOP after it endured worrying losses in November's elections that gave Democrats control of Congress and the White House.
Steele, Maryland's former lieutenant governor and the first black to head the RNC, said one of the most critical battles for the GOP is to capture New York's 20th congressional seat -- formerly held by U.S. Sen. Kristen Gillibrand, D-N.Y.
"It is the first of a series of races that are coming up that are going to be incredibly important," Steele said in remarks Saturday to the Republican House Retreat in Hot Springs, Va.
Steele said he will be in New York next week for a meeting with Republican state leadership to "map out the strategy to take that seat."
"That win will send a powerful signal to the rest of the country and especially those folks in the elite media who think they know so much more than the rest of us," he said.
"Our game is not up ... our message still rings true with countless Americans, specifically with those in the 20th congressional district," he added.

I would very much like to support him, but until or unless he clearly gets rid of his anti 2A jacket, I can’t and I won’t.
Exactly! In his (Steele’s) words:
Society should draw lines. What do you need an assault weapon for, if youre going hunting? Thats overkill. But I dont think that means you go to a total ban for those who want to use gun for skeet shooting or hunting or things like that But whats the point of passing gun laws if were not going to enforce them? If you want to talk about gun control, thats where you need to start. Weve got 300 gun laws on the books right now. At the end of the day, its about how we enforce the law.

Catholic Michael Steele (former seminarian) takes over leadership of RNC
Interesting. Third national Republican to start taking shots at the elites - Palin (her whole identity is being anti-elite), GWB in his final press conference, and now the new Chairman. If the lines continue to be drawn like this, Palin’s a shoe-in for the 2012 nomination.
“The Republican chairman said the GOP’s second focus will be
on winning the governorship in both Virginia and New Jersey,
along with other state offices.”
Black, Brown, and Yellow? /DU mode
I so wanted a ticket of Thompson-Steele.
I would have settled for McCain-Steele.
Don't get me wrong; I loved Sarah; but I think it did her more harm than good to be on a losing ticket this last time around, as far as 2012 is concerned.
Steele is a moron.
His very first task should be to revitalize the conservative base and force strict conservative-libertarian discipline among Republicans.
Folks, it's the same old story. The GOP has no intention of reforming itself. Same old same old. I'm registering with the Constitution Party, screw this crap.
Illinois has an opportunity to elect a Republican senator in 2010. He/she is unlikely to be a full conservative because this is very much a blue state.
If (former governor) Jim Edgar ran, he would definitely win.
That’s because the GOP is down now and cornered like an animal. It’s time to fight back or we’ll never get back to winning again in 2010. It’s all up to him now.
I second that.
Steele is going to be great. He understands party building. He helped deliver a Republican governor here in Maryland, for God’s sake, so anything is possible.
Contest those seats in blue New England and elsewhere. They are winnable with proper recruitment, funding and message discipline.
Recruit some of these patriotic vets coming home from the War on Terror and send them into battle against the socialist Democrat hordes who are close to wrecking this country.

Yay! Go, Michael Steele!
Not only is he conservative and prolife, he is also sartorially elegant and handsome.
He is the Anti-Obama!
I agree. He is very handsome. Not at all like the ugly child king.
The Gators are taking a bite out of Steele! :-D
"moron"...no. He is extremely bright...but maybe misdirected. Let's give it a month to see.

Absolutely! I agree.
"Folks, it's the same old story. The GOP has no intention of reforming itself. Same old same old"
Again, let's give it a month or so to see what other ideas or strategies he proposes. (Even though my "gut" tells me that you are correct!)
I'd like to see him threaten (with holding back any kind of reelection support) some of the RINO scum who keep voting for anything or anyone obambi sends forward....Maybe lining up and supporting primary opponents.
Then, if all else fails, send in knee-capping experts.
LOL.... We only look friendly because we have such large smiles.
For those that don't know Tim Kaine 1) is a Nanny Stater
2) Helped O take VA
3)is the new DNC chair
4) claimed "Ole Virginny is dead"
The website has an "on the issues" link. Try finding anything about real issues other than non-specific mentions of taxes. So, I sent an email asking what his stance on key issues (taxes, abortion, guns, etc), with a memo that real conservatives are looking for leadership not wishy washy "bi-partisanship." I haven't heard back and refuse to waste time checking up on his website... I think I'll repay the favor when I don't vote in the election.... or write in the Tomato from Vegie Tales.
