UK: Rush Limbaugh profile
London Telegraph ^ | 1/31/2009 | Tom Leonard

Posted on 01/30/2009 8:37:00 PM PST by bruinbirdman

Ronald Reagan described him as "the number one voice for Conservatism in our country" while, during the Clinton era, the National Review magazine grandly dubbed him the "leader of Conservative Principles".

Broadcasting from what he describes as a "heavily fortified bunker" in Palm Beach, Florida, Limbaugh has been America's most listened-to talk show host since the mid-1990s.

The show, which airs for three hours every weekday, has just reached its 20th year in syndication.

Heard on some 600 radio stations across America, it still attracts a weekly audience of more than 14 million people.

He earns a salary to match. Last year, Limbaugh, 58, signed a new contract with Clear Channel Communications that he said would earn him about $38 million a year, as well as a $100 million signing bonus.

Praised by Republicans for helping to offset what they see as liberal bias in the US media, Limbaugh is regarded as an enormously influential figure in presidential elections.

Democrats have accused him of dirty tactics. During the recent presidential nomination battle, he launched Operation Chaos, a radio campaign to encourage Republicans to vote for Hillary Clinton and so prolong the in-fighting among Democrats.

Limbaugh admits that his taste for political controversy is motivated primarily by business considerations.

He told the New York Times last year: "First and foremost, I'm a businessman. My first goal is to attract the largest possible audience so I can charge confiscatory ad rates.

"I happen to have great entertainment skills, but that enables me to sell airtime."

The Missouri-born presenter began his radio career as a teenager and went to become a music disc jockey.

After taking a break from radio to work for a Kansas City baseball team, he became a talk-show host in the 1980s.

Major controversies in his career included imitating the actor Michael J Fox, who has Parkinson's disease; describing servicemen who had attacked the Iraq conflict as "phoney soldiers"; and referring to Barack Obama as a "magic negro".
Lies. Irresponsible journalism on the part of the Telegraph. This is fraudulent and slanderous.

Thanks, I'm sure it is as everyone loves to listen to him. I developed hearing loss in my 30’s and can't listen to radio, so I miss it all. That's why I was surprised.

Heading to bed, thanks for your comment.

You can say that again!

Being called out by Obama probably will put $10 million more dollars into Rush’s pocket over the next four years, and that estimate may turn out to be dramatically low.

Mohammed Ali would be proud to see his old “rope a dope” trick still working...

"RUSH is a GIANT, not because he shapes our opinions...but because he gives voices to millions of us that think the same way!!"

That is the essence of the great truth that maintains this man's entertainment/advertising value and the libs just go into childish denial of such pure, simple truth!!!

Does the DittoCam have captions? Afterall, if anyone is sensitive to the hard of hearing, it would be El Rushbo.

I am sorry to read of your hearing loss. Rush has an implant for his...so I would hope he is sensitive to the hearing impaired audience. I am not a subscriber to his 24/7 podcast...but I am wondering if there is possible closed captioning? I know he refers to Dawn (one of his staff) who transcribes the callers comments to him (in real time) incase Rush has difficulty hearing/understanding them.

Oh my...I didn’t read your post til I responded to potlatch @ number 28. I wish subscribed to the the 24/7 EIB and had the DittoCam...but I don’t. I wondered (in the previous post) if Dawn (from his staff) who does the transcribing of the on-air callers (incase Rush doesn’t understand them) if her transcription is two sided (Rush’s commentary as well) and if that is closed captioned. I bet a subscribing DittoHead will give us the answer soon :)

LOL..I guess there is no ‘nuance’ in truth..therefore liberals cannot comprehend their own ‘grey matter’...much else their own shadow projections and collective mass psychosis.

I am also hearing impaired...I know just how you feel..I walk in your shoes...

BUT my day never ends until I have visited his website and read every thing he talked about.
I love that MAN

I miss so much listening to music, tapes and concerts, Rush knows how we suffer, as he still has difficulty...
good nite Friend.

Rush has a hearing loss, too. His hearing is so bad his phone conversations are converted to readable text, which he reads and responds to just as if he were hearing the caller.

“heavily fortified bunker”

More misinformation. This is in the lead-up to Mark Levine’s show.

I knew about Rush's implant. Nerve deafness can't be ‘cured’. I use captioning for TV but doubt I'd ever use it for a three hour radio show, lol.

If you can listen to him, you can be driving or doing many other things, but with caption you have to sit and watch constantly.

I hear about the ‘important’ things on the threads, so that's good. Thanks for writing!

[Rush knows how we suffer]

A kindred spirit! Thanks for your nice comments. Nobody knows till they walk in other’s shoes, do they? But, if I had to pick a ‘big’ loss, I guess this might be it. The loss of sight would be unbearable. We would not be on this forum, enjoying it.

I ‘listen’ to my old music that I am familiar with. Part of the listening is in my mind as I know the notes and words.

I understand how you miss your music and tapes, etc. I miss not being able to use all the new gadgets as I don't hear high tones. A GPS in the car, a cell phone that I could hear on, things like that.

The internet was invented for us haircutter!!

Yes I know. Even with his implant he needs all of that. Luckily he has the money for all the latest things and people to help him.

Otherwise none of you would still have him broadcasting.

Rush has the audio download, the audio-video download (without closed caption) and the transcript is available as HTML text.

Thanks gitmo. The audio is no good or I would just listen to the show. It’s good for those who missed it and want to hear it.

Don’t think I want to read through three hours of text, lol. I’ll just go by the things people post.

Actually, it is broken up into "articles". So you can peruse the website, pick out the ones that interest you, and read the transcript for that part. A lot of it is on the free side of the website, so you can go to rushlimbaugh.com and get a feel for what is there.
