White House Unbuttons Formal Dress Code
By SHERYL GAY STOLBERG January 28, 2009 WASHINGTON
The capital flew into a bit of a tizzy when, on his first full day in the White House, President Obama was photographed in the Oval Office without his suit jacket. There was, however, a logical explanation: Mr. Obama, who hates the cold, had cranked up the thermostat.
Mr. Obama has exhibited a relatively informal working relationship with aides like his staff secretary, Lisa Brown.
Hes from Hawaii, O.K.? said Mr. Obamas senior adviser, David Axelrod, who occupies the small but strategically located office next door to his boss. He likes it warm. You could grow orchids in there.
Thus did a rule of the George W. Bush administration coat and tie in the Oval Office at all times fall by the wayside, only the first of many signs that a more informal culture is growing up in the White House under new management.
Mr. Obama promised to bring change to Washington and he has not just in substance, but in presidential style.

Don't tell me; the NYT didn't even HINT that such a thing in these times is nothing less than a heinous act against mankind. Well, that's what they would have said had GW done it.
Anybody ever notice that the Left always tells others what to do but never practices what they preach on their own?
Like Barry's car. Until he started running for President he had a Chrysler 300C Hemi. Started running for president and talking the big talk about the environment.. oops! Time to buy a Prius.
Hypocrites all.
I don’t agree with Obama on hardly anything but I am not one for a strict dress code. I think the necktie is a grostesque piece of attire.
I thought the Dalai Bama said we couldn’t just drive around in our SUV’s and have our thermostats set to 72 degrees, summer or winter, because the rest of the world wouldn’t like it.
Them dems have demanded that we all turn our thermostats down to save the planet. This is yet another case of the liberal "do as I say not as I do" way of thinking.
Odd, I thought he was the junior senator from Illinois (where it's now 14 degrees).
“We can’t drive our SUVs and, you know, eat as much as we want and keep our homes on, you know, 72 degrees at all times, whether we’re living in the desert or we’re living in the tundra, and then just expect every other country is going to say OK, you know, you guys go ahead keep on using 25 percent of the world’s energy, even though you only account for 3 percent of the population, and we’ll be fine. Don’t worry about us. That’s not leadership.” ~~ Barack Obama
Oh, the carbon footprint. I thought we all had to make sacrifices.
It is the Yuppie way of life!
They all do it. In the middle of Winter, instead of putting on a sweater or keeping the jacket on, they jack up the thermostat.
They believe they are entitled to comfort everywhere, all the time.
JennysCool: "Prove it."
EXCELLENT!!!
When Mr. Bush moved in, he exercised his presidential decorating prerogatives and asked his wife, Laura, to supervise the design of a new rug.Following after clinton, GWB had to replace the old rug. Ewwwww.
Mr. Obama, who hates the cold, had cranked up the thermostat.
While a poor elderly veteran in MI was freezing to death in his MI home.
I always figured ties and coats would go out of style. I honestly only wear them at funerals.
...whatever, just as long as he doesn’t show up in a turban.
Respect for the Constitution is also out the window with this gang
I worked in an office building that wasn't well heated. As you observed, the women all plugged in a heater under the desk. That was outlawed when fuses blew and destroyed hours of work on software with a short fuse deadline. Dumping power to all the servers and desktop machines is bad. Especially when you're paying $200/hour for the software development work (times the number of developers whose work was trashed).
What, Obama has never lived with his family??? WTH kind of comment is this???
I'm waiting for the enviro-nazis to protest Pres. Obama's "abuse" of fossil fuels and added contribution to "global warming".
Good one!
Well, I don't think the family went to DC with him, since the girls were in private school in Chicago. The young one had to have been around 3 or 4 when he left Illinois.
It certainly isn't like he had to leave his family and jump a train to look for work during the Dust Bowl...but that would be something of a hardship, I'd guess.
Thank you for the reminder.
“We can’t just keep the thermostat on 72 all the time.”
Unless you’re the Obama. Let the peons shiver.
