Its not just the bipartisan mingling that makes Obamas cocktail party at the White House tonight a departure from the Bush era.
Its the cocktails. After sunset. During the week.
The event is another sign that the Obamas will have a more youthful, energetic approach to life in the White House than Washington has seen over the past eight years one where the president hosts roughly two dozen Republicans and Democrats for drinks and economic stimulus chit-chat.
Obamas gathering at the Executive Mansion sounds like a throwback to the days of Lyndon Johnson or conjures up images of Ronald Reagan and the other living presidents clinking cocktail glasses in the Oval Office.
Heres a sampling of the guest list (which is actually one Republican heavy):
DEMOCRATS House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) House Caucus Chair John Larson (D-Conn.) Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.) DCCC Chairman Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.)
REPUBLICANS House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) House Minority Eric Cantor (R-Va.) Rep. John Carter (R-Texas) Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.) Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) Senator John Thune (R-S.D.) Senator and NRSC Chairman John Cornyn (R-Texas)

from another thread on this, I said:
Party on! (does this remind anyone of Nero fiddling while Rome was burning?)
Still its a good way as any to build bridges and get the two groups talking. I give 0bama kudos for it.
From another thread on this, I said:F
I can see it now:
Republican: Thank you for the invitation Mr. Present. Here's my thoughts on the stimulus package...
Present Obama: Shut up! I won. Get over it. Now go check the bathroom to make sure there's toilet paper. Chop, chop. Hop to it.
Zero parties while millions go without power.

He’s gonna kill ‘em with kindness, eh? He sure knows how to play the people (via his media lapdogs) on how congenial and affable he is, so that when R’s oppose him they will look like ugly and ungrateful partisans.
Divide and conquer, Delphi Technique, Alinsky Method...
Oh Great... Open Bar at the Obama’s White House Parties.. all the Booze your tax dollars can buy. That should really be a jolt for the economy at our expense.
Politico portrays Zobama as more bipartisan than Bush.
They sure will do anything.
Maybe if everyone drinks enough booze at the Happy Hour at the Obamas, Nancy Pelosi will begin to look good.
Well, once you watch over 3,000 of your fellow Americans get killed and stand on the rubble where their bodies are buried, I think you realize it's time to put frivolities aside.
So, did they ship in Velvet Couches, and fair maidens to feed them grapes? What about the Eunuchs... Oh, yeah, he invited some GOP members to the party! ;)
I should’ve said that my comment didn’t include those mentioned in your list. :)
And let's not forget Ted Kennedy, I hear he can really put away a few cocktails, befor the brain cancer.
RETRACTION:
In light of today’s news that I’m just catching up on I retract my last jab at the GOP members in Congress... How was I supposed to know they all grew a pair in the last 24 hours??? :)
I’m surprised the House Reps are there.....I’m not sure why....the Senator’s are the ones Obambi will be targeting. Unless he’s making threats to the House members at the same time (highly likely.)
Why couldn’t the repubs “just say NO!”
It’s a principled thing!
