Gore Calls On Lawmakers To Curb Carbon Emissions, Support Fiscal Stimulus

(RTTNews) - Always willing to speak up on the issue of global warming, Nobel Prize winner Al Gore testified before former Senate colleagues Wednesday, urging action on carbon emissions. The former Vice President told lawmakers on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that actions must be taken "this year" to cut down on carbon emissions.

Gore expressed his concern that efforts to fight global warming could take a backseat in light of the severe recession and financial market turmoil. He provided evidence that recent climate changes have only upped the need for action, and told Congress to pass a bill capping greenhouse gas emissions this year.

He added that the issues of the economic crisis, as well as wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, are tied to the issues of energy independence.

"It is becoming clearer that they are linked by a common thread — our dangerous over-reliance on carbon-based fuels," he said in his testimony. "As long as we continue to send hundreds of billions of dollars for foreign oil — year after year — to the most dangerous and unstable regions of the world, our national security will continue to be at risk."

"As long as we continue to depend on dirty fossil fuels like coal and oil to meet our energy needs," Gore added, "we move closer and closer to several dangerous tipping points which scientists have repeatedly warned — again just yesterday — will threaten to make it impossible for us to avoid irretrievable destruction of the conditions that make human civilization possible on this planet."

Rather, Gore urged action to cap carbon emissions. Doing so would allow the U.S. to be seen as serious in its fight against global warming, Gore said, adding that the United States needs to take action if it wants to take a leading role in negotiating a new international climate treaty.

One of the chief criticisms of the Bush administration was their refusal to sign the Kyoto climate protocol. However, there are negotiations on a new agreement scheduled for 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Gore cited these as an opportunity for the United States to prove its sincerity.

Gore urged Congress to back, the $825 billion economic recovery act proposed by President Obama. In the stimulus there is a focus on energy independence, including tax breaks for green companies and the creation of green jobs. Without lawmaker cooperation, Gore offered a bleak outlook for the nation's security and warned that Americans way of life will remain at risk.

“Just another idiot wanting to make the USA a third world country as quickly as possible.”

I don’t believe Gore gives a rat’s hind end about America, Global Warming, or political ideology. What Gore is doing is trying to get rich off of carbon credits.

It seems to be working.

Funny how he is "ALWAYS willing to speak up on the issue of global warming," but is NEVER willing to engage in a public debate with any one of the thousands of credible skeptics who would willingly engage him in such a public forum.
