Cops: Invasion, Assault & Kidnapping a Hoax

Investigators are calling Monday's teacher disappearance a hoax, saying she's responsible for the anti-gay slur spray painted on her garage door, the broken window on her house and the blood and hair found in the kitchen. However, they stated, she hasn't committed a crime and will face no charges in an ordeal that she contends can't remember anything about.

"We don't feel like she was abducted. There is no evidence she was abducted," said Capt. Vic Hollifield of the McDowell County Sheriff's Office. "We feel like what we saw at the scene was overkill versus what we usually see with kidnappings."

Amanda Fields, 28, of 3199 U.S. 70 East is a seventh- and eighth-grade language arts teacher at West McDowell Junior High School. She failed to show up for work Monday, so a deputy went to her home to conduct a "welfare check." Sgt. Lynn Greene of the Sheriff's Office arrived to find Fields' car in the driveway with the door open and the keys lying in the seat. "Go to hell faggits" was painted in red on the garage door. When he saw that a window had been broken out of a door leading into the house, he went inside and discovered a small amount of blood smeared in the kitchen, along with some hair, a chair overturned and a guitar smashed to pieces in the living room.

Fields was nowhere to be found. Greene's discovery set off a 10-hour hunt for the teacher that included more than a dozen local and state officers, a K-9 and a helicopter.

Around 7 p.m., Fields came out of the woods and appeared at a residence on Candee Acres off Stacy Hill Road. She was wearing baseball cleats and multiple layers of clothing underneath her pajamas, suffered minor cuts and bruises and had a piece of rope wrapped around her left wrist and a cord dangling loosely from one of her ankles, according to Hollifield.

She was taken to Memorial Mission Hospital for evaluation and was released Monday night. The captain stated that all the evidence doesn't add up to abduction.

He said the Sheriff's Office received two reports from passers-by who spotted Fields shortly after 7 a.m. Monday. One person said she was walking on U.S. 70 East toward Hoppy Tom Hollow, and the other stated that was walking on Stacy Hill Road. They both said she was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and pajama bottoms and was carrying a tote bag that authorities later determined held a blanket, a water bottle and a large folding knife. She was reportedly alone on both occasions. "A person who does something like this has thought it through," Hollifield stated. "She had on extra clothes because she knew it was cold, she carried a blanket because she knew it was cold and she took water with her because she knew she would be in the woods." The captain added that detectives do not believe anyone was involved in the hoax but Fields.

"There are no tracks other than hers going in and out of there," he said. "We followed her tracks in a red clay field. Her shoe prints are the only ones we can find." Hollifield stated that the only property damaged, besides the broken window, was the guitar. The blood and hair, he contends, belonged to Fields and were put there by her. She did not suffer any major injuries in doing so.

"All of her wounds were superficial," he said. "She did not have any traumatic injuries." As of Monday afternoon, Hollifield said the only story Fields is giving investigators is that she doesn't remember what happened. She told them she recalls going to bed Sunday night and the next thing she remembers is waking up in the woods, according to the captain. He said they were going to continue their efforts to conduct a more in-depth interview with her. "Right now we have no idea why she did this," Hollifield stated. "We're waiting on her to tell us something." He added that no charges relating to the incident would be filed.

"She didn't report anything, so she didn't commit a crime," he stated. "We did our jobs. We had to cover our bases because, all too often, foul play has occurred in these situations. We take these events very seriously." The McDowell News attempts to reach Fields Tuesday were unsuccessful. Her phone number is not listed and no one answered the door at her home.

Obviously, the poor soul was driven to do this by the rampant homophobia ceaselessly spewed in the right-wing blogosphere. President Obama will soon take steps to address that problem!

After all, if you don’t remember, then it didn’t happen.

These people are simply pathological. 100 years ago she would have ended life as the “crazy aunt in the attic”. Why do we care so much about their pathological delusions and less the fact that they are stark raving mad and need to be supervised, instead of letting them run things.

"She didn't report anything, so she didn't commit a crime," he stated.

I hope, at least, she loses her teaching job. Should there really be someone this crazy teaching kids?

Send her a bill for $25/hour for each law enforcement person and the hourly rate for the helicopter. That's a fair price to pay for perpetrating a hoax. The taxpayers should not be liable for expenses caused by this looney. Actions have consequences. Let her pay the consequences.

She explicitly created a phony "crime scene" to elicit the search. It was a premeditated act.

Another fake hate crime. Get in line behind Duke Lacrosse, Tawanna Brawley and a host of others. Now that this is shown to be a fake I'll bet it loses media coverage. If it had been a “real” crime, then we never would have heard the end of it.
