What are the best choices? Just got my coupons, rarely actually watch TV, just want to be able to get school closings and an occasional football game.
Go to WalMart and get the Magnavox converter. Final cost is $10.
Not hard to set up, works well. If your TV has the three cable video input (red, yellow and white jacks) pick up a $6 cable if you don’t have one. You don’t need the $11 version.
I've also heard the RCA DTA800(?) and Radio Shack "Digital Stream" are very good.
The INSIGNIA boxes work well. Easy set-up and use.
The RCA boxes...not so much......
YMMV
Do you really need to use the government-issued, taxpayer-funded coupon for this? If you really need to, I don’t guess it’s my business, but ...
Look on Consumer Report web page. Tells you all about it.
Has a chart, showing good, better, best.
I like the Dish Networks box
Powder..patch..ball FIRE!
Maganvox doesn’t have a volume control OR online channel guide for upcoming shows.
Is it complicated to install the Magnavox’
I keep hoping that an underground TV station will broadcast an unauthorized signal and then I can get some reception after the changeover.
Do people that take govt coupons for convertor boxes forfeit their right to complain about govt bailouts? Just wondering.
I did not intend to take some “holier-than-thou” position on this thing and hope it isn’t taken that way.
Government mandated the change, and the coupons were paid for by the auction of the old frequency bands.
You've handed Obama another victory. Congratulations.
IMHO , never ever ever never buy anything from Phillip/Magnovox. It’s crap and there’s NO customer service!!!!!!!
Just get cable or sat.
regards Bdad :-)
No other box to compare it to . . . But compared to my old analogue antenna signal, the quality of the picture is incredible (when the signal is strong enough, which is 90% of the time).
This box has the "online" TV guide. And many channels are broadcasting multiple channels, as well as SD and HD versions. Impressed so far.
And if you are in an area that will have a lot of local digital broadcast TV, seriously consider a DTVPal DVR. It'll cost around $260 and the coupons do not apply on that model. But if you all of a sudden find yourself relying on local broadcast, you will have the luxury of DVR...which is fast becoming a necessity.
Actually, Insignia is LG which is GE!.
