A new bill is being introduced called, Camera Phone Predator Alert Act, which would require any mobile phone containing a digital camera to sound a tone whenever a photograph is taken with the camera's phone. It would also prohibit such a phone from being equipped with a means of disabling or silencing the tone.
While its a good gesture, I do not believe having such a law would deter criminals from hacking their camera phones to take pictures in inappropriate ways. Also, the real criminals would not even use a camera phone but would probably use other devices such as a hidden camera. Regardless, at least with the bill signed into law it would allow prosecution and jail time for individuals that get caught with a camera phone that does not make the noise.
One question does remain, what if you have a camera phone that doesn't make the noise at all or is suppressible? Would older phones still be covered under this new law?

A Republican with no sense what so ever.
Republicans better get a message and stay on it. This has to be the worst timing of something like this in my memory.
I already called his office. He should have had a V8 before he submitted this.

He was probably looking for something less expensive than the bail out. Or perhaps the cell phone companies sent him a bunch of $$

My digital camera has a volume for the “click” sound and it can be turned off. There will be times when I turn it off when I’ve been asked to take some pictures in a group setting with a bunch of friends or relatives. It makes them less nervous than hearing the “click/whirr” sound all the time. They are more natural and more “real” in the pictures.
That law is stupid and crazy. Might as well tell me when I have to eat and go to the bathroom, too...

It would also prohibit such a phone from being equipped with a means of disabling or silencing the tone. And the millions of phones already on the market?
The genie is out of the bottle.
Why don't we keep homosexuals out of lockerrooms since that seems to be the concern.
The only who will get a "compromising" photo of you undressed must already be WATCHING you undress.

Well, roughly 47 percent, anyway.

How about instead there is a "law" that every digital photo snapped with a phone must first go to "the home office" for proper screening before it can be accessed by the phone owner? < /SARC >

With strong and well thought out public policy initiatives like the Camera Phone Predator Alert Act, the Republican Party is sure to surge back into control. Why, if this had been on the books in Oakland, CA recently, the cops could have seized all the phones they needed. That or have been able to sue the citizens for damaging their hearing.

This is precisely why the authority and scope of any legislature must be limited. These idiots don't have a clue about any technology above a toaster, yet they introduce legislation to mandate silly things like this. The hack to turn the click off will be on the internet within 24 hours of this ridiculous idea being implemented, and what the legislators don't get is that private citizens tinkering with stuff in their basements generally outperform government boobs on a regular basis. All this law would accomplish is to raise the cost of manufacturing of this device, and/or to mandate things that consumers find so annoying that they stop buying the product. The one thing it will NOT do is accomplish its stated goal.
We honestly have gotten to the point where a group of people randomly selected from the phonebook would, indeed, be more competent and probably more Constitution-abiding, than the professional shucksters that we have in government now.

That’s right up there with “all guns must be gun-shaped or require special government taxation and permission to own”.... Oh, wait, that’s already law.
