The U.N. human rights chief on Thursday warmly welcomed President Barack Obama's decision to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center and called on the new U.S. administration to follow up by reviewing its approach to detaining people in other countries, including Afghanistan and Iraq.
Navi Pillay also called for a thorough investigation into allegations of torture at the Guantanamo center in Cuba and said detainees who were innocent or arbitrarily detained should be adequately compensated "for the six or seven years of their lives that have been lost." ....
Calling for a thorough investigation into allegations of torture at Guantanamo, she said, "under international law, there is an absolute prohibition against torture, and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment."
"There is no let-out clause," Pillay stressed. "There must be accountability for those who have ordered such practices or carried them out, and victims should receive recompense."
Pillay, who was a South African judge before taking the top U.N. human rights post headquartered in Geneva last summer, also raised concerns about U.S. detentions in locations outside the United States including Afghanistan and Iraq.
"There have been many disturbing questions about the legality of overseas centers such as the Bagram base in Afghanistan," she said. "These too need to be resolved quickly and satisfactorily, in order to reestablish full respect for human rights across the board."
At U.N. headquarters, Assistant Secretary-General Robert Orr, who chairs a task force implementing the U.N.'s counter-terrorism strategy "strongly welcomed" Obama's announcements, saying "human rights is very clearly at the center" of the U.N. global strategy to fight terrorism, and all governments recognize its centrality.
"It's one thing to say it and it's another thing to do it," Orr told reporters

Are we still in the UN? Why?
Now, with our new president, we’ll be the UN’s best friend.
Another arrogant proclamation from a useless, corrupt UN maggot collecting a paycheck for doing nothing.
IN the meantime, those they have murdered, or those they meant to, HAVE no rights.
The U.N. can kiss off!
I wanted to say, “thanks to you guys that didn’t vote for McCain so you could make some type of statement.” I hope you feel good about yourselves. Don’t get me wrong, I do not like McCain but he would have been better than BO. Hell, Hillary would have been tougher than both of them.
Obama is going to throw this country at the feet of the UN on these matters, we are so screwed if we cannot take any prisoners in war.
scratch that... our enemies are screwed if we decide not to take prisoners in war.
McCain will support him no matter what he does
Thank God the U.N. is there to keep nations like ours in line. What would the world do if they weren’t? /s
Questioning the UN? Its time for your re-education session.
Exactly. There will be no more arrests or detainment of groups of white flaggers. They will be shot on sight once this becomes reality.
I will not soil myself by voting for the likes of John McCain. If you wish to, be my guest.
I note that John is going to start up or strengthen his non-profit he started with George Soros. I’m sure that makes your heart flutter...
sadly they’ll be food delivery missions to really bad off countries we have no business sending troops into. As long as he doesn’t send them in unarmed.
Bend over and drop your pants.
-the UN to the current US government....
If I were Prez for a week, I’d issue an executive order to demolish the UN by Saturday afternoon.
And the UN has stopped terrorism, where? Somalia? Pakistan? Israel? Lebanon? Iraq (lost a great UN official there)? Afghanistan? Congo? Liberia? Sierra Leone? Senegal? Chad? Algeria? Spain? England? Germany? Turkey? Argentina? Thailand? Phillippines? Rwanda? Zimbabwe?
Hey UN guys. I’ve got a lot more countries than you’ve killed terrorists.
Drop dead!

Hey Ms Pillay, how about a thorough investigation into UN forces and agents enegaging in human trafficking and selling food for sex in the countries where they are supposedly providing relief and humanitarian aid? Clean up your own damn house!
My feelings too. I think the UN ought to go to another country. I am sick of them & find them of no use.
