A Texas high school girls basketball team on the winning end of a 100-0 blowout has apologized to the losing school, calling the game "shameful and an embarrassment."

I agree with you. Unfortunately, I’m not surprised by some of the comments I’ve read on this thread.
All three of my kids play competitive sports and i have rarely encountered the attitudes i have seen exhibited on this thread and my oldest is a college sophomore!
well they are a classy bunch of girls, since there was no bellyaching about the loss or the classless run up of score.
Huh? Doing the best you can in team sports means doing your best to win. Continuing to pour it on against an obviously inferior opponent isn't doing your best. It's poor sportsmanship.
They don't have to prostrate themselves like this now, and further humiliate the opponent. But by the time it was 25-0 somebody should have noticed the game was safe, and started passing the ball around and running out the clock.
another sane voice. one can play one’s best and win without exhibiting classlessness and poor sportsmanship. i am sure they really would have fallen off their game had they only won by 75 pts!
Girls high school basketball, who cares. There is nothing sad nor is the entire story worth reading. It was only about 3 paragraphs.
But if you've got a coach with a brain, the winning team knows how to let the pathetic opponent score a few ( and to keep the score under 100). It's just common sense.
If you ain’t first, you’re last.
I agree with you. Apparently a lot of people "feel" different and think that self-esteem can be provided to people without them earning it.
I have competed in chess tournaments with 800 players. The rating system was used to create rating sections and players were always allowed to play up in order to challeng themselves. The "open" section, in which the grandmasters competed, was just that, OPEN to any player of any rating. But the grandmaster who got paired with a lower rated player did not have the luxury of throwing the game to prevent hurt feelings. Such behavior is forbidden, as I recall, by the federation and a grandmaster couldn't afford the hit to his rating by recording a loss to a lower-ranked player.
If parents wish to protect their children from the harsh realities of life, they may do so. But I would think it a greater humiliation to know that one's competitor was obligated to hold back rather than to suffer a lop-sided loss.
Not to make light of the disease, but what does dyslexia have to do with them losing 100-0? What does reading letters backwards have to do with shooting a round ball through a hoop?
There’s players in the NBA that are probably can’t read, it doesn’t hurt them any. So I don’t see how it’s “dishonorable” to beat a team full of hyper brats and dyslexics as bad as you can.
Hold the score down? Hard to do even with your best players on the bench against a weak opponent.
Absolutely no class on the part of the coaches of the winning team. Running up the score at any level from tee ball to professional sports is BS and unacceptable and anybody who’s spent any time coaching should know that. I’ve coached baseball for many years at all age levels and I’d come pretty close to strangling a coach who didn’t get that. No, I’m not a puss. I’ve coached a team that won a Little League state championship and have a nephew who currently plays major league baseball. You don’t do it. Period.
The whole purpose of basketball is to play to win. They did so without cheating or dirty play, so whats the beef? Would the team that lost want something less than a best effort by their opponent? Just W H Y are they playing the sport if they dont want to take a chance on losing?
Quite clearly they lost, and in all likelihood expected no other result. But whatever beating a team 100-0 is, it is not sportsmanship.Of course it is a temptation to try to reach the century mark - but why stop there? Do you actually suppose that they just happened to get the hundredth point with a buzzer beater shot?
Put in your scrubs and let them and the other team play. It is a given that you will still win.
see post 53. that freeper understands and teaches his players sportsmanship. it amazes me so many freepers don’t get the concept.
I’m going to disagree with you. It would have been sporting for the winners to back off both the score and also to let the opponent score one or two at the end. This is only because the losing team was so obviously outgunned by the winners.
Why would this game even be scheduled for that long? Make it a exhibition for fifteen minutes...but they didn't. So why is it up to the girls to make that decision? Sorry...the whole thing is silly. These disabled girls should not be playing regular teams in regularly scheduled games..it's not good for anyone.
So, are you saying that the losing team would have felt better if they only lost by 75 points? They would have felt better knowing the other team just decided they weren't even worth playing their best for? THIS TEAM HAS LOST EVERY GAME THEY'VE EVER PLAYED. If you want to go all Mommy on someone, it should be whichever numbskull puts this team on the roster.
