A Texas high school girls basketball team on the winning end of a 100-0 blowout has apologized to the losing school, calling the game "shameful and an embarrassment."

The whole purpose of basketball is to play to win. They did so without cheating or dirty play, so what’s the beef? Would the team that lost want something less than a best effort by their opponent? Just W H Y are they playing the sport if they don’t want to take a chance on losing?
Or possibly 0 - 001.
..And the pussifying of America continues.
Post of the day.
“They had ADD. Which means worst case scenario theyre hyper brats.”
Actually, they are RICH hyper brats. I tried to get my ADD daughter in that school. When they finally told me what the tuition was (and after I asked about financial aid!) I was told to “come back when you win the lottery.” If they can’t get a coach worth a darn for the $10,000 plus they charge per kid, they don’t deserve to win. Or, the owner is just saving money and coaching them himself.
Maybe they should do a make over or how about a Recount so we all can be FAIR. Every game has a winner and a loser.
my 14 yo daughter plays on her HS JV team, which sounds similar to Dallas Academy, it’s a tiny school, they have their first game this friday. we’ll see how they do. She also plays on a girls rec league team which is quite good, she is the weakest player. the last game the rec league team played where they were up by a lot, her coach kept my daughter in for 3 full quarters [she was sucking wind, i gotta tell ya!] trying to give her some playing time and trying to set her up for plays etc. They SPECIFICALLY didn’t run the score up on the other team, but gave their lesser players more playing time.
Did you miss the part where the losing team didn’t ask the winners to forfeit? The losers have been losing consistently for four years and the team is comprised of learning disabled kids. The winning team made the choice to apologize. I’m not sure I agree that they needed to do anything, but don’t blame the losing team for this one.
That is what I say about the last presidential election. It also applies to the Franken Fiasco.
um, up by 100 pts, kinda hard to figure there was ANY chance of losing. i think it is commonly accepted that a sign of SPORTSMANSHIP, which is important to teach kids, also, is not piling on, running up the score etc. Do you think WOOFING is ok too? how about hitting from behind, in hockey?
Cool - glad to hear she got some playing time.
he always plays her, even last night in a close game she got a fair amount and because of it, she’s gaining confidence. it surprises me to see the reactions to this story. i am all about winning and losing and not giving ribbons to the losers etc. but i honestly thought that it was accepted in sports that running up the score by a ton was considered poor sportsmanship. All of my kids play/played sports and there is always a mercy rule of some stripe, and even when there isn’t, it is kind of EMBARRASSING for the team that is running up the score.
Did you miss the part of my post saying "without cheating or dirty play"? If there was a mercy rule in place (and there should have been), then it should have been enforced. Sportsmanship is one thing but disrespecting the sport (and the opponents) by not playing your best is another consideration. You develop stamina by running the court and a winning attitude by playing your best. Taking it easy may cost them in later games.
It should be noted that later that boys team (of the losing school) went out and beat the winning schools boys team later. Apparently there is only like 20 girls in the school most of whom have never played basketball before.
What is more disturbing to me is the contingent here making fun of learning disabled kids. Now they are just brats or whiners. Apparently these fortunate folks didn’t read the part where the losing school didn’t ask the winners to forfeit.... they took the loss like they have every single game for four years.
i don’t disagree with you in principle at all, but honestly running up a score by 100 points is just in poor taste. that would be like running it up 20 to 0 in hockey. Exhibiting sportsmanship and class in a single basketball game is hardly endangering anyone’s stamina. the 100-0 run up was just totally classless, and looks like they realized it at some point.
The apology is sufficient, I think. Hopefully these girls learned a lesson in sportsmanship.
yeah. well, i am inured to the attitudes of some freepers about things like learning disabilities etc. The ignorance of many here, unfortunately, is legion.
these girls? LOL! how about some of the freepers on this thread?? Honestly, i thought it was commonly accepted that running up a score was poor sportsmanship, but from reading this thread, i thought i might be living on another planet!
