Chinese melamine defendants face death

The Chinese melamine scandal is expected to claim more lives after the country’s courts sentenced two people with alleged involvement in last year’s contamination to death and imprisoned an industry executive, say news reports.

Tian Wenhua, who until last year headed Sanlu, one of the country’s leading dairy producers, faces life in prison for her role in allegedly turning allowing the sale of dangerous and substandard products, the Reuters news agency reported.

Sanlu, which is partly owned by New Zealand-based cooperative Fonterra and has filed for bankruptcy as of this month, was one of a number of groups, including Arla Mengniu linked to supplying contaminated products in the country.

Two other defendants face death for their suspected involvement in contaminating milk that found its way into infant formulas and other finished products of companies operating in China, claimed the report.

State news also suggested that The Intermediate People's Court in Shijiazhuang sentenced three other former executives of the Sanlu company to serve jail terms of between 5 to 15 years for their suspected involvement.

Melamine scare

The contamination scandal was related to the presence of the industrial chemical melamine in milk products, linked to the hospitalisation of thousands of Chinese children as well a number of deaths.

Melamine is a chemical that can make it appear there is more protein in a product, and has been linked to causing kidney stones and other health problems.

The scandal has since led to food and beverage products sourced from the country being pulled from shelves around the world over safety fears, leading to a number of multinationals having to review their operations in the country.

Europe-based Arla Foods announced in October that production of milk powders through its China-based joint venture had recommenced, after the installation of new testing systems for production in the country.

Production at the Mengniu Arla milk powder plant in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, had been out of commission since 16 September when news of the scandal first emerged, the group said at the time.

Somehow I doubt these folks will rot away in prison for 20+years with endless appeals and cable TV piped into their own private rooms.

China seems to execute a small number of people each time something like this happens. But these things still happen, and it doesn’t seem like the death penalty is really stopping these activities. I’m wondering if the people being executed are either fall guys or they do not have the type of connections needed to get out of this kind of trouble.

I’m sure the Chinese gov’t is corrupt on many levels but they have to try to make some big public statement on this issue because the Chinese people have given up so much freedom and if they don’t feel the government is doing enough to protect them from this kind of stuff and/or punishing the perps severely, their control over the people may collapse.

I thought the Melamine contamination was because Melamine was widely approved for use as a fertilizer in China.

The question then becomes, should the Dairy producers be held accountable for not knowing that Melamine was dangerous? Who approved it for use as a fertilizer or was there even a fertilizer approval process? Who manufactured it for use as a fertilizer?

I think the Dairy guys are fall guys.

I remember something a couple of years ago (I think it was in China) where they convicted some business guy, a millionaire, of fraud and sentenced him to death. He was yelling something about appealing the decision as he was led away from the court room. He was executed less than an hour later.

The melamine is a plastic added to the food product (milk, dog or cat food)because when the product is tested, the melamine shows a higher protein concentration.

The FDA recently set guidelines for the amount of melamine that will be allowed in baby formula in the US.

We’re following China’s illustrious example (sarc) that there’s no food that is not made better by some added plastic.

They should feed them their own contaminated goods.

Then you wouldn't be able to sell their organs.

This sounds like an excellent idea for the former Fannie and Freddie folks, and the congress people that were supposed to oversee them. It would also work for the CEO’s of Citi, WAMU, Merril, Bear, and IndyMac. Kill Madoff too while you are at it.

Wanna restore confidence in the system? See that there’s more at stake in this than money for the perpetrators.

In America, melamine is used to make dishes

My mom loved the colorful dishes and we ate off melamine for years

I saw some in a store as recently as December.

Hey, at least they won't have to eat melamine contaminated food.

Yeah, I think the FDA is completely corrupt at this point. Under fire for allowing mercury in vaccinations, they came out and said mercury in fish is safe for pregnant women and infants. They have no credibility left.

I’m actually thinking the FDA is one area where any change Obama brings can’t help but improve it. But then, that might still be delusionally optimistic.
