Geithner: "I used Turbo Tax" (Video)
Timothy Geithner ^ | 1/21/09 | Timothy Geithner

Posted on 01/21/2009 3:31:08 PM PST by careyb

Check this out. When asked by Grassley if he used tax software, he emphatically states that the problem is his fault and not the fault of the software. Then Grassley asks him if the software asked him about the additional income. He replies: "Not to my recollection."

So which is it? The software's fault or his?

What you failed to mention is that the IMF re-imburses its "contractors" for FICA and medicare taxes that the contractor incurs. Geithner applied for and received this re-imbursement, he just didn't bother to pay it.

I’ve used TurboTax for self-employment income for a decade or so now. The only way to fail to calculate self-employment taxes is to enter inaccurate numbers for your self-employment income. He’s a liar and a tax cheat.

From Byron York in NRO

What senators learned at the gathering was not only that Geithner had failed to pay self-employment taxes during his time at the International Monetary Fund. They learned that the IMF had repeatedly informed Geithner, as it had all its employees, of his obligation to pay that tax. They learned that Geithner signed documents saying he would pay the tax. And they learned that Geithner accepted IMF reimbursement for Social Security and Medicare taxes that he had not, in fact, paid.

“”Which is it? Is Geithner a total idiot? Or is he crooked?””

And not one Senator on the panel asked him what he did with the reimbursement of the FICA and Medicare taxes paid to him by the IMF. We’re surrounded by idiots!

Prolly used it to pay for his kids' sleep-away camp......that he deducted as "child care expenses."

I think trying to apply any kind of ethical reasoning to Washington as a whole, is now a mistake. I feel to analyze their actions, you must think like them. And that takes a considerable degredation in morals, ethics, honesty, patriotism, and care for America.....

I have long ago given up using tax software on even my simple finances and if the Sec. of the Treasury doesn’t have his taxes professionally prepared he is too dumb for the office.

He is a lying cheat!

Yep -- lying cheat ... and looking to blame Intuit.

I have started asking people I talk with if they trust government. I rarely get a yes. When I do, it is a qualified yes.

If I was running Turbo Tax I wouldn’t let this stand. Your right they need to get out there and defend themselves on TV.

They should do something.........

http://www.cnbc.com/id/28773292

Shares of Inuit fell to their low on the day on strong volume after Treasury Secretary nominee Timothy Geithner reluctantly admitted during testimony before the Senate Finance Committee that he used the company’s TurboTax software to prepare his returns.

He is worse than a cheat. After the audit for 2003 and 2004 he knew he owed taxes for 2001 and 2002. He only payed them after being vetted. He had no intention of paying them otherwise. I think intentionally not paying them is an even more serious charge!

He didn’t explain why he IGNORED the IRS letter says the taxes were overdue.

This is why I laughed when he said it was “unavoidable”. Liberals cannot accept responsibility.

I use Turbo Tax. It’s a good program and pretty much idiot proof.

The last sentence in the press release nails it; Geither overrode the system or ignored error messages.
