A big WHOA to one of the finest officers and soldiers this nation has ever had. Beyond a Band of Brothers was a great read.

Happy birthday Winters. You may no think of yourself as a hero but the rest of us know better.

I bought "Band of Brothers" but haven't gotten around to reading it. I'd also like to read Major Winters' autobiography.

READ THEM BOTH!! In his autobiography he talks about the British couple who he lived with in England, incredible people. Also more details of the men who he commanded in easy company that Ambrose didn't have room for in Band of Brothers. Read Band of Brothers first, though. Both are great reads, very captivating, never boring from beginning to end. Trust me, FRiend.

The interviews and extra’s are the best part.

And you could tell right away before they even showed his name, when the real "Wild Bill" Guarnere was being interviewed.

Some beavers were causing some problems on his property and he wouldn’t exterminate them like most people do because he valued all life.

JRR Tolkienn expressed similar concerns when he wrote the following dialogue for Gandalf in the LOTR "Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play yet, for good or ill before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many."

I have tried to learn from the wisdom of those that experienced the horrors of war first-hand. Unfortunately, as Eccelstiastes states, "A time to kill, and a time to heal...a time of war, and a time of peace. "

In peacetime, we must all be slow to kill anything that has the breath of life, for we cannot give or restore it!

Major Winters has learned these lessons, and he expresses them without any war-mongering or anti-war bias.

Absolutely! I think the character portray in the miniseries was pretty good, too.

My son recently made Eagle Scout and greatly admired Major Winters. My husband wrote to Major Winters and my son received a very nice letter and autographed photo of him when the 101st was in Belgium. One of the great Anericans that served their country.

Not that I have seen or heard. I know that he has heart problems, but I have not seen or heard anything about his death. I would have thought it would make some news if he had.

We saw an extra hour of BoB when it first aired. It was very interesting hearing from these men so many years later. Someday we’ll get the DVDs from Netflix and watch it again.

Steven Ambrose was a terrific writer. I started reading his book on the Lewis and Clark expedition, but my time ran out and I had to get it back to the library. I'll get it again.

The man just had a gift for words, and did NOT deserve the treatment the elitist media and so-called intelligentsia gave him with their charges of plagarism.

Major Winters is the example that all American infantry commanders should strive to follow. Happy birthday and thank you.
